Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) is one of the public two-year colleges in Kentucky’s KCTCS system. The current college took shape in 2005 when Lexington Community College and Central Kentucky Technical College were consolidated. It now lists more than 40 areas of study and six campuses across Central Kentucky, plus a specialized equine training site in Lexington. The location matters: a nursing lab, English placement test, workforce class and transfer course may be at different addresses.
Applying: documents, placement and selective programs
New applicants start with the free online application. First-time students generally send an official high-school transcript or GED record and submit ACT/SAT scores or placement results; transfer applicants provide official college transcripts. BCTC uses placement information and completed coursework to guide English and math classes. Some health, nursing, dental, paramedic and technical programs have selective admission, prerequisites, tests or additional deadlines beyond general college acceptance.
The college’s admissions guidelines identify requirements by student type. A person who only wants one or two classes may apply as non-degree seeking, but that status has limits and does not qualify for federal student aid. Start several weeks ahead, send transcripts early and ask an advisor which placement step is needed for your intended program.
2026–27 tuition and fees
For 2026–27, BCTC lists tuition at $198 per credit hour for Kentucky residents and $270 for nonresidents. Dual-credit tuition is $99 per credit. Online-only courses are listed at $198 per credit regardless of residency. Students also pay an $8-per-credit mandatory fee; online distance courses add a $20-per-credit distance-learning fee. Program labs, supplies, books, security and licensing expenses may add to the total, so the per-credit figure is not a complete budget.
BCTC’s cost-of-attendance estimate assumes full-time enrollment of 12 credits each semester and includes separate estimates for housing, transport, books and other indirect costs. The tuition and cost page includes the current rates and a net-price calculator. Kentucky residency, dual-credit status and online-only enrollment can change the calculation; confirm which category applies before registering.
Programs, credits and how long a credential takes
BCTC awards associate degrees, diplomas and certificates in more than 40 fields. Its program finder spans business and information technology, advanced manufacturing, construction and skilled trades, nursing and allied health, public safety, culinary and creative fields, equine studies and transfer education. A full-time associate program often follows a two-year plan, but prerequisites, selective admission, course rotation, clinical placement and part-time study can change the actual time to completion.
Before choosing a major, compare the current catalog’s required credits and course sequence with the locations that offer each class. Some short workforce certificates can be completed faster; others ladder into an associate degree. A student planning to transfer should ask whether credits will apply to the intended university program rather than relying on the title of the course alone.
Financial aid and scholarships
File the FAFSA and enter BCTC’s federal school code, 005244. The college offers grants, loans and work-study to eligible students and may request verification documents before releasing an offer. FAFSA can be submitted before admission, but the college says it cannot make a financial-aid offer until the student is admitted to an eligible degree program. Non-degree students are not eligible for federal student aid.
BCTC’s institutional scholarship application is a separate process. The college says applications for the next academic year generally become available November 1; awards vary by program, academic record, need and other criteria. Its published 2026 cycle closed September 30, 2026, so applicants should check for the new cycle rather than rely on an old deadline. Scholarships require annual FAFSA filing and satisfactory academic progress when those conditions apply. Use the scholarship page to reach the current application and eligibility details.
English classes for learners at different stages
English learners can build skills before beginning a credit program through free Workplace English Language Development (WELD) classes offered by BCTC Adult Education. The college describes academic and conversational formats, available throughout the year, with local contacts in Fayette and several surrounding counties. These classes are a practical first step for adults who want workplace English, GED preparation or help preparing for college.
Students who want college credit can apply for Academic English Language Learning (ELL). BCTC describes 16-week courses meeting twice a week, generally worth three or four credits, with instruction in writing, grammar, college reading, listening and speaking. Applicants submit the admission form and high-school or GED transcript, then arrange placement testing. English-learner placement exams are available only at the Newtown Campus Testing Center, 690 Newtown Pike. The college’s English-language page explains both routes and lists staff who can help prospective students.
Choosing a campus or training site
Lexington’s Newtown Campus is the central academic and student-services location; Leestown emphasizes health and technical programs; Newtown North, a separate address, houses adult education, dental hygiene, cosmetology and testing. Equine Studies trains at the Thoroughbred Training Center. Regional sites in Danville, Georgetown, Lawrenceburg and Winchester bring transfer, technical, nursing or workforce options closer to communities outside Lexington.
Student parking is free at BCTC campuses. The college also offers a no-cost Class Pass for Lexington campuses while available. Use the profiles below to match a program to its actual classroom, lab or support office, then check campus maps and the current schedule. Winchester now has two instructional buildings, while Newtown and Newtown North are separate addresses even though they are close together.
A practical first step
Choose the credential or support you need, then confirm admission requirements, total credits, program length, residency tuition, financial-aid eligibility and the site where each class meets. If English is still developing, ask whether community WELD, academic ELL or a placement assessment is the right starting point. Apply early, keep copies of transcripts and financial-aid documents, and verify current schedules before traveling.
Start with the college’s admissions and enrollment checklist or contact a campus advisor. For a selective health program, a workforce certificate or Equine training, speak with the relevant program office before assuming the general application completes every step.
Check current details and choose according to your budget, time and way of travelling.
