South Plains College (SPC) is the public two-year college serving the South Plains region, with its main campus in Levelland and three teaching locations in Lubbock. A student can take academic classes intended for transfer, train for a technical career, or build toward a short certificate. The right starting point depends on the program: the Lubbock sites do not teach every degree, and some health programs require a separate competitive application.
Three Lubbock locations, three different starting points
The Downtown Center brings Arts and Sciences classes and student support into a remodeled former city hall near central Lubbock. The Career and Technical Center is organized around labs and workforce training, from welding and automotive technology to culinary arts and computer systems. The Reese Center concentrates health-science programs and professional truck-driving instruction west of town. SPC’s campus directory and maps list addresses for each and the college’s other regional locations.
Programs, degrees and realistic timelines
SPC lists more than 100 program options in Arts and Sciences, business, technical education and health sciences. An associate degree may be planned for transfer to a four-year university or designed for direct career preparation. Many Associate of Applied Science plans contain 60 semester credits and are described by SPC as two-year degrees; certificates can take less time, but length and credit totals depend on the specific plan. Completing a full-time load on schedule is not automatic: prerequisites, course rotations, clinical placements and selective admission can change the timeline. Compare the current SPC catalog and degree plans before choosing a major.
Applying and meeting placement requirements
Most new students begin with the SPC application and submit official high-school or GED records and transcripts from prior colleges. Students planning college-level classes generally need the Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSI), unless they meet an exemption. Applicants younger than 22 must provide proof of meningitis vaccination under Texas rules. Adults without a high-school credential may ask Admissions and Records about individual approval; admission to SPC does not by itself guarantee acceptance into a selective program such as nursing. Start with the application checklist and contact an advisor if you have transfer credits, a placement question or a program-specific deadline.
What Lubbock residents may pay
SPC’s published Fall and Spring 2026–27 chart lists campus-specific tuition and fees for a 12-credit semester at its Lubbock sites: $1,606 for in-district residents, $2,626 for Texas residents outside the district, and $2,818 for non-residents. Lubbock residents generally fall in the out-of-district category because the taxing district is limited to Hockley County and the Whiteface school district area in Cochran County; the college determines each student’s classification. These figures do not include special course or equipment charges, internet or late-registration fees, books, supplies, meals or housing. Check the current tuition chart and the separate cost-of-attendance estimate before budgeting.
FAFSA, grants and SPC scholarships
To be considered for federal aid, submit a FAFSA each year and list South Plains College using school code 003611. Eligibility for most funds requires an eligible citizenship or immigration status, enrollment in a degree-seeking program, at least half-time study for many awards and satisfactory academic progress. Grants, work-study, loans, state aid and institutional scholarships have different rules. The Fall 2027 SPC scholarship application is scheduled to open November 18, 2026, with March 1, 2027 as the priority date; new applicants must first apply to SPC and be admitted before signing into the award portal. Review the FAFSA steps and the scholarship application and dates.
If you need English before college classes
SPC’s credit-bearing English as a Second Language (ESOL) courses focus on academic reading, vocabulary, grammar and writing, but the current course page lists these classes at the Levelland campus rather than the Lubbock sites. In Lubbock, adults can also contact Education Service Center Region 17: its Adult Education program lists free English, reading and writing classes at the Lomax Building, 1601 24th Street, with current hours and enrollment rules online. Literacy Lubbock separately offers adult ESL classes and conversation practice with free registration for adults 18 and older. These are adult-learning routes, not SPC admission or guaranteed placement; ask the program and an SPC advisor how to sequence English study with TSI and a degree plan. See Region 17’s current classes and Literacy Lubbock’s adult programs.
Services, parking and getting between locations
The Downtown Center has a library, academic tutoring, advising, admissions and testing. The Career and Technical Center pairs student services with computer classrooms and hands-on automotive, welding, metals, construction and culinary labs. Reese Center’s health programs use a clinical simulation facility with four suites; the campus map locates admissions, financial aid, advising, testing, a library and a health and wellness office. Student parking at SPC requires a valid permit, and spaces are designated and first come, first served. The paid SPC Express shuttle connects Reese and the Lubbock Career and Technical Center with Levelland on a schedule that can change; Citibus serves the city, so check its live route map for the Downtown address. Open each campus profile for its address and one-click directions, then confirm the building where your class or appointment meets.
SPC was authorized by Hockley County voters in 1957 and began classes in 1958. It began offering instruction at the former Reese Air Force Base in 1970, opened its Career and Technical Center in 2017, and opened the current 46-classroom Downtown Center for Arts and Sciences in 2021. Its present model connects a two-year transfer college with occupational programs and continuing workforce education across the region. That history explains why “South Plains College in Lubbock” refers to several distinct sites, while the college’s main campus and many central offices remain in Levelland.
