The Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) is the state’s public, two-year college, and Liston Campus is its main Providence site. That distinction matters when choosing classes: CCRI serves the whole state through four main campuses and two satellite education centers, while Providence students can begin with the programs and services offered at Liston, then check the catalog for courses that meet at another campus or online.
What a Providence student can study
CCRI lists more than 200 degrees and certificates across transfer study, business, health, technology, public service, arts and workforce education. Its 2026–27 catalog identifies offerings tied specifically to Liston, including biology and environmental-science transfer paths, social-science transfer options, social services, modern languages and several certificates in business, case management, ecology, human services, mental health and wellness, phlebotomy and renal dialysis. The campus also hosts the Associate Degree Nursing program: its 2026–27 plan lists 66 credits, including 11 prerequisite credits before the recommended two-year nursing sequence. Admission is selective, and clinical schedules shape the workload. These are examples from the campus catalog, not a promise that every course runs each term; check the current schedule, required credits and any cross-campus courses before building a plan. The program catalog by campus is the best starting point.
Applying and meeting placement requirements
CCRI describes its general admissions policy as open access. A high-school diploma or equivalency is not a general admission requirement for applicants who are at least 18, though official school records help determine placement. Applicants under 18 must provide transcripts showing graduation before enrollment. Some health programs require a diploma or equivalent, prerequisite courses, placement scores and a separate competitive application. CCRI uses multiple measures for course placement; SAT scores are not required for general admission. Students with education completed outside the United States may need an authorized credential evaluation. Begin with the online application and admissions checklist, then speak with One Stop about transcripts, placement and the exact campus where a class meets.
Published tuition and ways to lower the bill
The 2026–27 catalog lists full-time general tuition for 12 or more credits per semester at $2,792 for in-state students, $4,186 for regional students and $7,900 for out-of-state students. The listed registration, activity, learning-resource, technology, commuting/parking and campus-service fees add $249 per term, before course-specific lab fees. CCRI separately lists a $21-per-credit First Day Complete materials charge; check the current bill to see what applies to your courses. These published figures were marked accurate as of March 20, 2025 and may change by state action, so confirm the current tuition and fee schedule and your residency classification before budgeting.
For eligible recent Rhode Island high-school graduates and qualifying GED recipients, the Rhode Island Promise scholarship can cover mandatory tuition and fees for up to two years in an associate-degree program. Eligibility includes Rhode Island residency, enrolling in the term immediately after graduation or GED completion (with limited exceptions), filing the FAFSA and completing required aid steps; students must meet credit and GPA conditions to keep the award. People who are not eligible can still apply for federal and state aid through FAFSA, CCRI Foundation scholarships and other awards. CCRI lists more than 80 Foundation scholarships. The campus’s Educational Opportunity Center also offers free, confidential FAFSA help, including bilingual counselors; review the Promise requirements and financial-aid options before assuming a grant will cover a particular program.
English support before and during college
CCRI has two distinct English-learning routes. Its credit-bearing English Language Learners program is designed for students preparing for academic study; course levels cover reading, writing, speaking and listening, and each level is a 15-week course with three to five hours of instruction per week. The college offers selected ELL classes at all four main campuses, including Liston, and asks new students to take an ELL Accuplacer placement assessment. Its noncredit English Language Studies workforce courses focus on workplace and everyday communication; CCRI currently lists level classes, advanced courses and conversation practice with published fees and durations. These classes can build English skills, but they do not replace admission, placement or program prerequisites. Contact the academic English Language Learners program or workforce English Language Studies office to find the next Providence offering and the right entry level.
Inside Liston and getting there
The Liston Campus sits on nearly seven acres on Providence’s south side. CCRI describes a contemporary brick building with more than 20 classrooms, workshop areas, a central atrium and a 250-seat auditorium. Its floor directory places Admissions, Records and the Bursar, advising and counseling, disability services, the ESL/Reading Lab, Writing Center, bookstore and cafeteria on the first floor; the second floor includes the library, tutoring and the Educational Opportunity Center. The main campus page links official building maps and directions.
RIPTA’s current system map lists Route 6 for CCRI Liston. The college also maintains designated student and visitor parking; the short-term spaces near Student Services have time limits, and the campus parking policy assigns lots by user group. Confirm the current bus schedule and parking instructions before an appointment. For a quick route, use the directions to 1 Hilton Street; use the college’s schedule to confirm the classroom or service office once on site.
A campus shaped by its city
Rhode Island Junior College opened in Providence in 1964, initially in temporary quarters. In 1965, Royal W. Knight gave land in Warwick for the institution’s first permanent site; the college later expanded across the state and adopted the name Community College of Rhode Island in 1980. CCRI acquired the former Opportunities Industrialization Center building at One Hilton Street in 1990 and opened the Providence campus that September. Today Liston places degree classes, nursing labs and student services in a neighborhood setting, while connecting learners to a statewide public college. Its scale is useful for a first visit: start at One Stop or advising, verify the course location, and map out the next semester before paying for a full schedule.
