Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) is a public two-year college serving Guilford County and the surrounding Triad. It began in 1958 as the Guilford Industrial Education Center, created to provide practical technical education, and has since grown into a multi-campus college with associate degrees, diplomas, certificates, workforce training, adult education and university-transfer pathways. The name changed to Guilford Technical Institute in 1965 and to Guilford Technical Community College in 1983. The current campus network includes Jamestown, Greensboro, High Point, Colfax and specialized locations in Greensboro.
Programs, credentials and study time
GTCC’s current catalog spans health care, aviation, public safety, business, information technology, engineering, manufacturing, construction, education, transportation, hospitality, arts and university-transfer study. Students can work toward an associate degree, diploma or certificate; short-term continuing-education classes offer a separate route to job skills and industry credentials. Many associate pathways are designed for about two years of full-time study, but the exact number of credits, prerequisites, clinical hours and course sequence are specific to each program. The catalog’s program maps are the reliable place to compare those details before choosing a campus or planning a graduation date.
Some programs use guided or selective admission because seats, clinical placements or safety requirements are limited. These can require prerequisite classes, test scores, background checks, immunizations or a separate application. General admission does not itself guarantee entry to a particular cohort. Explore the current program directory and ask the department which courses are offered at each campus.
How to apply
GTCC follows North Carolina’s open-door admission policy: adults who can benefit from further education may apply, while high-school students and younger applicants follow separate rules. A prospective student submits the online application, completes residency determination, sends official school and college transcripts when required, checks placement requirements and activates the college account. New students then complete online orientation and first advising before registering. The college says routine application processing usually takes two to three business days, though timing can change with volume.
Admission is the beginning of the process rather than a promise of immediate class registration. A program can require additional screening, and students must satisfy prerequisites before certain courses. The application checklist links to the form, transcript instructions, placement information and student-service appointments.
Tuition and the wider budget for 2026–27
For 2026–27, GTCC’s published in-state tuition is $76 per credit hour and out-of-state tuition is $268 per credit hour. A 12-credit semester therefore starts at $912 in tuition for an in-state student or $3,216 for an out-of-state student. The college’s cost-of-attendance table adds $103 in term fees and estimates books and supplies at $785 per term. On that basis, its annual tuition estimate for two 12-credit terms is $1,824 in-state or $6,432 out-of-state, before fees, books and living expenses. These are published planning figures, not a personal bill; some programs add laboratory, equipment or course fees, and state or board action can change rates.
The full annual budget is much higher because it also estimates food, housing, transportation and personal expenses. For example, GTCC lists a two-term total of $23,012 for an in-state student living at home and $27,557 for one living away from home; its out-of-state estimates are $27,620 and $32,165 respectively. Those totals are financial-aid planning budgets, not tuition charges owed to the college. Review the 2026–27 cost-of-attendance table and ask the cashier or financial-aid office for a program-specific estimate.
Scholarships, grants and aid
Students seeking federal aid complete the FAFSA and use GTCC’s school code, 004838. Depending on eligibility, an award package can include Pell Grants, state grants, scholarships, work-study and loans. GTCC’s Access Amazing Scholarship is a local last-dollar program for eligible Guilford County high-school graduates from 2021 through 2026 and certain GED/high-school-equivalency graduates who took classes at GTCC. It can cover remaining in-state tuition, college fees and course fees after other grants and scholarships are applied; books and instructional supplies are excluded. Applicants must complete both FAFSA and the GTCC scholarship application, and support depends on available funding and continued eligibility.
North Carolina residents may also investigate the state’s Next NC Scholarship, which can help cover tuition and fees for eligible students whose household income is $80,000 or less. Eligibility rules, enrollment requirements and annual deadlines apply, and awards should not be assumed until a financial-aid notice confirms them. Start with Access Amazing’s current requirements and GTCC’s financial-aid staff.
English classes and a route toward college study
GTCC Adult Education offers free English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) for adults whose first language is not English. Seven levels, from beginning to advanced, cover listening, speaking, reading and writing; the program also offers citizenship preparation, family literacy and career-focused English. New students request information, attend an in-person orientation, complete registration forms and take an English placement assessment so staff can identify an appropriate level. Classes meet at Greensboro Campus and High Point Campus, with daytime and evening sections; availability depends on level and term.
The ESOL classes are noncredit adult education, separate from credit-bearing English courses needed for a degree. Eligible students may ask staff about bus passes, and the college’s Adult Education page lists the locations, current intake steps and contact numbers. This gives learners a starting point for building everyday and academic English while they explore a later certificate or degree.
Which GTCC location fits the goal?
Jamestown is the main campus and the broadest base for technical, health, public-safety, transfer and career programs. Greensboro emphasizes construction, engineering, electrical and mechanical fields and hosts the Adult Education Center. High Point combines general education and health-care training with the Larry Gatlin School of Entertainment Technology, whose studio and sound, lighting and music labs support hands-on instruction. The Donald W. Cameron Campus in Colfax focuses on advanced training, business and industry courses, logistics, electrical systems and technical certifications.
Downtown, Union Square is a joint health-education and workforce-development site operated with North Carolina A&T, UNC Greensboro and Cone Health; its simulation environment is built for health instruction. GTCC’s three Aviation locations serve aircraft systems, avionics, aerospace manufacturing and pilot or aviation-management pathways. The Small Business Center in Greensboro offers entrepreneurs business counseling and seminars rather than a general degree schedule. The campus profiles below identify each site’s address, main function and relevant services so readers can plan a visit to the right building.
Transportation and a practical first visit
Students and employees can obtain free GTCC parking permits, which are required to park in campus spaces. The Jamestown campus parking deck is free for students, faculty and staff. Visitor parking rules and available lots can differ, so use the official campus map for the particular site. For public transportation, GTCC points students to Greensboro Transit Agency, High Point Transit and regional PART services; bus-pass or transportation assistance may be available through student support or Adult Education for eligible students.
Before travelling, check the class schedule and map: the college’s seven campuses and specialized centers have different academic roles, and not every course is offered at every address. A useful sequence is to choose a program, check its credit map and special admission rules, submit the application and transcripts, file FAFSA, then complete placement and advising. For someone still building English skills, contact Adult Education first about a free ESOL intake. Confirm costs and course locations with GTCC before registering.
Begin with GTCC’s application steps, compare its program directory, and contact admissions or financial aid to confirm the right next step.
Check current details and choose according to your budget, time and way of travelling.
