Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) is a public community-college district created to serve Detroit and most of Wayne County. Michigan established it in 1967; first classes began in fall 1969, initially in borrowed classrooms, and the district adopted its current name in 1997. Today WCCCD lists more than 130 degree and certificate programs and six locations, from a downtown teaching complex to suburban campuses and a university-partner center. Location matters because some labs, services and career pathways are concentrated at one site.
Admission is the first step; selective programs have another gate
WCCCD describes general admission as open-door for applicants aged 18 and older. New students submit an application, complete online orientation and required assessment steps, and meet an academic advisor before choosing classes. Dual enrollment, adult education, international and transfer students follow additional procedures. Admission to WCCCD does not guarantee a place in a selective health or technical program; some require prerequisites, testing, a separate application or a limited cohort. Follow the official enrollment steps and ask the department about the next application cycle.
Tuition figures and the limits of a budget estimate
The newest itemized per-credit tuition table currently posted by WCCCD is for Spring 2026. It lists $112 per credit for district residents, $121.20 for other Michigan residents and $151.80 for out-of-state and international students. Its 12-credit examples, including registration, student-activity and technology fees, total $1,556, $1,666.40 and $2,033.60 respectively; lab, science, distance-learning and program charges may add to that bill. A separate 2026–27 financial-aid budget estimates $3,614 in tuition and fees for a full-time in-district student over two semesters. That is a planning allowance, not a term invoice or a published Fall 2026 rate table. Confirm the current schedule and residency classification before registering.
Financial aid, Detroit Promise and Michigan Reconnect
Students can file the FAFSA and review federal and state aid, WCCCD scholarships and payment plans. Detroit Promise is a last-dollar tuition-and-mandatory-fee route for eligible students who live in Detroit and graduate from a Detroit high school in the current year; registration before graduation, FAFSA and college enrollment steps apply. Michigan Reconnect expanded in 2026: Michigan residents aged 21 or older without an associate or bachelor’s degree may qualify for in-district tuition support for an eligible associate degree or industry-recognized certificate, subject to state residency, FAFSA, program and academic rules. WCCCD also lists awards tied to Detroit residence, a field of study, completed credits, GPA, financial need or an essay. Aid is not automatic: compare the college scholarship conditions with the state Reconnect requirements before relying on an award.
Programs, credits and realistic completion time
WCCCD calls an associate degree a typical two-year credential and groups many programs by estimated terms to completion; certificates often take less time. The Associate of Arts is listed at 60 credits and in the college’s three-to-four-semester group, but a student’s pace depends on prerequisites, placement, course availability and transfer credit. Nursing is a more demanding example: the published AAS plan totals 69 credits, including 22 prerequisite credits and a five-semester nursing sequence; entry is competitive, with Spring and Fall admission cycles. Those are catalog pathways, not a promise that every student will finish on the same date. The program directory shows the college’s estimates, and the department handbook defines each application route.
English study before and alongside a degree plan
WCCCD lists credit-bearing English as a Second Language courses ESL 101 and ESL 102; the Spring 2026 schedule showed sections at Downtown. Its Language Institute is also located there, while course availability depends on term and placement. Ask an advisor which class matches the student’s level, whether it carries credit and how it fits a degree and financial-aid plan. The Fall 2026 schedule and current class search show what is available now; a past class section should not be assumed to repeat.
Six locations, six different academic roles
The Curtis L. Ivery Downtown Campus combines central classes and student support with cybersecurity, language study, physical-therapy training, an art gallery and a separate wellness center. Downriver Campus in Taylor pairs transfer and career study with first-responder training, a woodland preserve and a performing-arts venue. Eastern Campus on Detroit’s east side houses mechatronics and workforce-development facilities. Northwest Campus is the district’s concentrated health-sciences site, with IT and culinary facilities. Ted Scott Campus near Belleville emphasizes practical nursing and advanced computer technology. The Mary Ellen Stempfle University Center hosts partner universities and selected advanced programs, with learning-technology services at another Vernier Road address.
Plan the trip to the right building
WCCCD issues parking permits without charge at Downtown, Northwest, Eastern, Downriver and Ted Scott. It says the permits are valid at district campus lots and asks applicants for a driver’s license, vehicle registration and student ID or class confirmation. Visitors to events at Downriver’s Prechter Center have separate parking instructions. Since campuses span Detroit, Taylor, Belleville and Harper Woods, check the class schedule, campus map and department guidance; one institution can have several buildings at a single address. Use each profile’s directions link to navigate to the correct location.
A practical sequence is to identify the credential and teaching site, check prerequisites and class sequence, establish residency for tuition, submit the admission and aid forms, and meet an advisor before registering. The district catalog and schedule are useful starting points; the profiles below explain what is specific to each location. If a future-term cost or requirement is not clearly published, check with the college office rather than estimating it.
Check current details and choose according to your budget, time and way of travelling.
