How to study at Pikes Peak State College: admission, tuition, ESL and campuses

A practical guide to 2026–27 tuition, open-door admission, financial aid, English-language study and choosing among PPSC’s Colorado Springs campuses.

Pikes Peak State College (PPSC) serves Colorado Springs and the surrounding region through four main campuses, specialized health-sciences instruction and online courses. Its name still carries its community-college history, but the institution now offers bachelor’s degrees as well as associate degrees, certificates and workforce training. The right starting point depends on the credential: a student planning to transfer, enter nursing, improve academic English or learn a trade may begin at different buildings and follow different admission steps.

How admission works

PPSC describes its standard application as free, online and open year-round, with no entrance essay or test required to apply. That open-door route is different from acceptance into a selective cohort: nursing and other health programs can require prerequisite courses, placement results and an additional application. International students follow separate rules. PPSC currently says it is not issuing I-20s for ESL and is not accepting new F-1 or M-1 applications; contact Enrollment Services before planning around a student visa. Start with the application instructions, then complete orientation, placement or program-specific steps that apply to your goal.

A practical first checklist is to create an applicant account, submit the admission form, watch for the student ID, complete any placement requirement and meet with an advisor before registering. Applicants with prior college work should ask how transcripts and transfer credits are evaluated. A free application does not mean that every course or career program has an open seat, nor does it guarantee that a particular class will be offered at the nearest campus.

What tuition costs in 2026–27

For fall 2026 through summer 2027, the published on-campus undergraduate tuition is $183.75 per credit for a Colorado resident using the College Opportunity Fund (COF), $299.75 without COF, $754.25 for a nonresident and $275.60 for a Western Undergraduate Exchange student. The mandatory campus and student fee adds $17.32 per credit. On that basis, 15 on-campus credits come to about $3,016.05 for a resident with COF, $4,756.05 for a resident without it, $11,573.55 for a nonresident and $4,393.80 for a WUE student, before course-specific charges, books or personal expenses. Online, nursing, dental-hygiene and other rates differ. Check the current tuition and fee table and ask the college to confirm your residency and course mode.

The COF is a state tuition benefit, not a loan: PPSC lists its 2026–27 value as $116 per eligible undergraduate credit, up to 145 credits. Eligibility depends on Colorado residency or another qualifying status and lawful-presence rules. A student should authorize the fund in the college portal and compare the net amount on the actual account statement rather than subtracting it twice from a rate that already says “with COF.”

FAFSA, scholarships and local Promise support

Submit a new FAFSA each academic year if you are a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen; PPSC’s federal school code is 008896. The college also accepts CASFA for qualifying Colorado students who cannot use federal aid. Its published priority date is March 31; later applications may still be reviewed, but funds are not guaranteed. FAFSA eligibility generally requires enrollment in an eligible degree or certificate program, so ask whether a noncredit or short ESL course qualifies before counting on federal aid.

The PPSC Foundation’s general application for Spring 2027 awards is open October 1–December 10, 2026. Many foundation awards are need-based and require the current FAFSA or CASFA to be on file. Separate Promise Programs cover on-campus tuition and fees for eligible graduates from Colorado Springs School Districts 2 and 11 and for qualifying Native American tribal members; the college requires a completed FAFSA or CASFA and any program documents. Colorado’s Promise tax credit and the College Opportunity Fund are separate benefits with separate eligibility, so verify which applies to your household and credential before using them in a budget.

English study before regular college classes

PPSC’s credit-bearing English as a Second Language (ESL) program is an academic route for students who already understand basic spoken English and want stronger reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and pronunciation. Students apply to the college, take a short ESL placement test, meet an ESL advisor and register at the level the results indicate. The sequence has basic, intermediate and advanced levels; the catalog says a full-time student may finish the sequence in three semesters. Grammar courses carry five credits, pronunciation three and most other ESL courses four. PPSC says each three-credit course involves about six to seven hours of weekly homework. ESL is not free, but the college identifies financial-aid and scholarship options; free tutoring is available to current students. Students who are not yet comfortable with basic conversation are directed to community English classes first. Review the ESL application and placement steps and use the FAQ to check credit and aid details.

Programs, credits and realistic timelines

The 2026–27 catalog groups study into business, technology and public service; technical and professional studies; arts, humanities and social sciences; science, engineering and math; and health sciences. A statewide Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree with designation is generally 60 credits and can transfer with junior standing to a participating university. At 15 credits in each fall and spring semester, that is commonly four semesters, assuming the student is ready for college-level courses and follows the recommended sequence. The catalog’s Psychology AS is one 60-credit example. Nursing, surgical technology and similar health pathways are selective and may take longer because prerequisites, cohort entry and clinical sequence affect the calendar. The RN-to-BSN is a bachelor’s route for registered nurses: its catalog plan lists 48.5 new course credits alongside 71.5 recognized associate-degree/license credits. Certificates and applied degrees vary. Compare the catalog’s program plans and ask an advisor to map credits to the career you want.

Choose the campus by program, not only by distance

Centennial Campus, at 5675 S Academy Boulevard, is the main campus and the broadest starting point for technical programs, business, public service, student services and most general courses. Rampart Range Campus, at 2070 Interquest Parkway, serves the north side with general education and science, engineering and math, and houses the Delta Dental Oral Health Career Center. Downtown Campus, at 100 W Pikes Peak Avenue, emphasizes arts, humanities and social sciences; its Studio West annex across the street hosts theatre, dance and gallery activity. CHES, at 1850 Cypress Semi Drive, is the Health Sciences training and simulation center. Each profile gives the address, program focus, facilities, parking and details associated with that exact site.

Parking is free at the college, but rules differ. Centennial has visitor and future-student spaces in lots C, D and E; Rampart uses lots 1–5. Downtown students can use Antlers Garage without charge only with the required pass or hang tag, and the college warns against nearby private lots. CHES has very limited parking; PPSC recommends Mountain Metro Route 40 or parking at Rampart and carpooling. A student ID also serves as a Mountain Metro bus pass. Before setting out, check the course schedule, building code, campus map and current transit timetable. Open the official campus maps and parking instructions.

A college built from local access needs

PPSC began in 1968 as El Paso County Community College, formed to bring vocational and liberal-arts study to the Pikes Peak region. In its first years it adapted buildings around Colorado Springs, including a former grocery store remembered as “Safeway U.” The college dedicated its Centennial Campus on August 18, 1976, took the name Pikes Peak Community College in 1978 and became Pikes Peak State College in 2022 as its mission expanded to include bachelor’s degrees. Today the four-campus arrangement reflects that growth: a broad main campus, a northern STEM and dental site, a downtown arts location and a specialized health-sciences center.

That history matters to applicants because the institution is both a transfer point and a destination for occupational training. Start with the credential and career outcome, then check prerequisites, cost by residency, English placement and the site where required classes meet. The links in this guide lead to the current application, tuition, aid, ESL and catalog pages; an advisor can turn those rules into a term-by-term plan.
