Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) began in 1965 with classes in a former department store. Its permanent Main Campus grew around the former U.S. Mint buildings on Spring Garden Street, and the college later opened regional centers in West and Northeast Philadelphia. Today, a student can pursue associate degrees, certificates, career training, transfer coursework and noncredit community classes. The first decision is often geographic: several programs can be completed at a regional center, while others require classes at the Main Campus or Career and Advanced Technology Center.
Admission and placement
CCP has an open-admission route for many applicants, but admission is not the same as automatic placement into every class. New students submit an application, confirm acceptance, provide academic records and satisfy English and math placement through approved transcripts, test results or an assessment. Selective health and career programs may set additional prerequisites. After placement, students register for sections and pay by the published deadline. Apply to CCP, then use the admissions office to confirm which records your program needs.
Tuition, fees and aid
For Fall 2026, Philadelphia residents pay $174 per credit in tuition, plus a $30 technology fee and $4 general college fee per credit. The college’s sample 13-credit schedule totals $2,879, including a $175 biology course fee. Other Pennsylvania residents pay $348 per credit plus a $10 capital fee; students from outside Pennsylvania pay $522 plus a $20 capital fee. Course materials and program-specific expenses can add to those amounts. FAFSA school code 003249 begins the federal-aid process; state grants, institutional scholarships and the Octavius Catto Scholarship have distinct eligibility rules. Catto is designed for qualifying Philadelphia high-school graduates and should not be treated as a benefit for every adult applicant. Review the current tuition table before calculating a term.
English classes and college study
The English as a Second Language Institute is a noncredit community-education option. For Fall 2026, most courses are listed at $80 each, with American Idioms at $100, plus textbooks. New students apply, attend an information session and take a placement test; the academic calendar sets the testing, registration and class months. The institute is separate from a degree program. CCP says it does not offer stand-alone ESL for international students seeking F-1 status; those applicants choose a full-time degree program and may be assigned additional ESL courses. Credit students can also use English-language learner supports while working toward an academic credential. Check the ESL Institute schedule and ask the college which pathway fits your goal.
Which location fits?
The Main Campus at 1700 Spring Garden Street holds the broadest range of college-wide services and facilities, including the library and learning commons, athletics center, student life building and Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management. The Career and Advanced Technology Center at 4750 Market Street focuses on hands-on transportation technology, manufacturing and health-care workforce programs. Northeast Regional Center at 12901 Townsend Road has more than 50 classrooms, a learning commons, computer lab, biology lab, art studio and dining area; selected health-care and liberal-arts programs can be completed there. West Regional Center at 4731 Ludlow Street has 25 classrooms and on-site liberal-arts options, with the Market-Frankford Line and several bus routes nearby. Northwest Regional Center is currently closed, so it is not included as an active study site.
CCP publishes directions and student-service schedules for each center, but the catalog and course schedule decide where a specific section meets. Confirm the location before choosing parking or a transit route. A certificate may take fewer terms than an associate degree, while transfer programs are planned around the receiving university’s requirements; compare credits and prerequisites with an adviser. The profiles below explain what each active location contributes and link to directions for a first visit.
