Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) offers a public route to study in Albuquerque and its metro area, but it is not a one-building college. It has five teaching campuses—Main, Montoya, South Valley, Westside and Rio Rancho—plus specialized centers for technology, media, fabrication, workforce training and professional learning. Rio Rancho is a separate city even though it is part of the district CNM serves. Before choosing a schedule or making a trip, identify the exact address for a course: the program, advising appointment and lab may be in different places.
The institution opened on July 1, 1965, as Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute (TVI), with 150 students and roots in practical training. Its educational scope expanded over the decades; state approval to award degrees came in 1986, and the institution adopted the Central New Mexico Community College name in 2006. Today it lists more than 80 degree and certificate programs, in addition to adult basic education and workforce training. The catalog lays out each path: an associate degree generally requires at least 60 credits, while a certificate has its own course load and sequence. Two years of full-time study is a useful reference for some associate degrees, not a universal promise.
How to start an application
CNM’s general application is free and submitted online. After applying, save the student ID and set up a myCNM account; next come orientation when required, placement, advising, class selection, registration and payment. Someone pursuing a degree or certificate needs to choose the right academic status, because admission to the college does not always mean acceptance into a selective program. Health fields, hands-on trades and other specialties may require prerequisites, assessments, documents or separate start dates. The admissions application and steps after applying provide the entry point and sequence.
School documents and placement in math or reading depend on a student’s record and program. CNM accepts several placement methods, including prior scores, self-placement tools and prerequisite courses; an adviser can help identify the correct option. Applicants under 18 follow special rules: some enter through dual credit with their high school, while those who have completed high school provide the appropriate credential. Students educated outside the United States should ask early whether transcripts need translation or evaluation. Non-degree study is also possible, but that route generally does not qualify for federal financial aid.
Published tuition for 2026–27
CNM sets tuition by residency classification and says fees and course-material charges are additional. For 2026–27, a New Mexico resident taking one to eleven credits pays $76 per credit; the 12-to-18-credit load has base tuition of $912 per term. For nonresidents, the table lists $369 per credit for one to eleven credits and $4,428 for 12 to 18 credits. Thus, a three-credit class represents $228 in resident tuition or $1,107 for a nonresident before fees and materials. Specialty programs, online CNM eCollege courses, labs and courses with supplies can have different charges. Check the tuition and residency table and the program’s budget before estimating the full cost.
Scholarships, federal aid and costs beyond tuition
New Mexico residents may qualify for the state Opportunity Scholarship, which can cover up to 100% of tuition and required fees in eligible programs. The state Higher Education Department says there is no separate scholarship application: the college financial-aid office determines eligibility, with at least six credits toward an eligible credential as a starting requirement. Full rules matter; not every noncredit class or personal expense is covered. The state recommends filing the FAFSA to explore federal support for books, housing, transportation and other costs.
New Mexico’s Lottery Scholarship serves residents who meet specific recent-graduate or state-equivalency requirements. CNM lists conditions such as beginning the qualifying term within 16 months of receiving the credential, completing at least 12 credits in that term, earning a 2.5 GPA and maintaining full-time enrollment for continuation. It starts in the second term and has limits on duration and program exceptions. CNM also administers institutional scholarships; one application covers many awards, but some require a recommendation and personal statement, and funding varies. Financial Aid and Scholarship Services offers English- and Spanish-language help at Main, Montoya, South Valley and Westside. File the FAFSA using federal school code 004742 and review the CNM scholarship application; do not subtract an award from the budget until it is confirmed.
Learning English before credit-bearing classes
People still developing English can start with English as a Second Language (ESL) in Adult Basic Education. CNM offers in-person and online classes, places students through an assessment, and lists tutoring, conversation groups, workshops and computer-lab resources. The published ABE and ESL fee is $10 per term, with hardship waivers potentially available. These are noncredit classes: they strengthen reading, writing, speaking and listening for everyday life, work and future study, but they do not replace applying to a regular program or count as a degree. CNM’s ESL page explains current enrollment, while Adult Basic Education covers ESL and GED or HiSET preparation. A learner who needs a high-school equivalency should check the ABE process, which has its own placement and enrollment steps.
Programs, credits and how long they take
CNM’s catalog spans health, nursing, technology, business, liberal arts, digital media, education, construction, electrical work, automotive and aviation maintenance, welding and other trades. AA and AS degrees commonly prepare students to transfer credits to a university; the AAS leans toward employment and applied learning, although transfer depends on agreements and the receiving program. CNM defines associate degrees as requiring at least 60 credits. A student taking about 15 credits each fall and spring might complete a 60-credit sequence in roughly two academic years if courses are offered in order and prerequisites are passed. Certificates can take less or more time; clinical practice, cohorts, part-time enrollment and developmental courses can extend the calendar. The 2026–27 catalog and official class schedule list credits, requirements, formats and campus locations by program.
Choose a location that fits the pathway
The general campuses serve different needs. Main brings student services and broad academic offerings near downtown and Nob Hill; Montoya has cosmetology, dental-assisting, art and chemistry spaces in the northeast; South Valley connects with Pajarito Village; Westside serves the northwest; and Rio Rancho serves that city with nursing, emergency services, teacher education, media and trades. Specialized centers narrow the choice: the Advanced Technology Center houses advanced technical training; FUSE lets people fabricate and learn equipment; Rail Yards hosts audiovisual production; RioTECH prepares high-school students and adults for trades; STEMulus supports technology training and entrepreneurship; and the WORKforce Training Center serves employers, professional testing and small businesses. They are not all degree campuses and do not provide identical enrollment services.
ABQ RIDE serves the five campuses. CNM warns that lots at Montoya, Westside, South Valley, Rio Rancho and the Advanced Technology Center require permits; visitors should check authorized choices, such as a day pass or designated spaces, before parking. Main and downtown centers have different access arrangements. CNM’s official transportation and parking page helps plan a visit. The individual profiles below include addresses and a one-click Google Maps route: Main, Montoya, South Valley, Westside, Rio Rancho, Advanced Technology Center, FUSE, Rail Yards, RioTECH, STEMulus and WORKforce Training Center.
A useful first plan answers three questions: what credential you want, what that program requires and where each class will meet. Then ask an adviser to review the route, compare costs after possible awards and confirm application dates. If English or a high-school equivalency is the immediate barrier, Adult Basic Education offers a low-cost starting point. The next step is not to guess the length of an entire career path, but to check the credit sequence and schedule CNM offers for the intended term.
Check current details and choose according to your budget, time and way of travelling.
