How to attend Bakersfield College: admission, tuition, English and campuses

Admission steps, published 2026–27 costs, scholarships, academic English and guidance for choosing among Bakersfield College sites in Bakersfield and Kern County.

At Bakersfield College, the first decision is often geographic: do you need the broad program and service hub on Panorama Drive, a downtown class at the Weill Institute, or a closer teaching site in Arvin, Delano, southwest Bakersfield or Shafter? Founded in 1913, BC is one of California’s long-running public community colleges. The college reports 44,803 students in 2024–25 and 269 degrees and certificates. Its reach across Kern County brings instruction closer to rural communities, while course schedules and services vary by location.

A standard associate degree is built around at least 60 applicable units, and BC describes a 15-unit semester, 30-unit year plan as a two-year transfer pace. That is a planning model, not a promise: prerequisites, course availability, work and family schedules, and selective admission can change the timeline. Short career certificates can take fewer units; the published EMT course, for example, is nine units over 16 weeks. The current catalog is the place to check each credential’s exact sequence and requirements.

Apply, then complete the enrollment steps

New students begin with a CCCApply application. Bakersfield College’s five-step sequence continues through financial-aid applications, orientation, a Comprehensive Student Education Plan and registration. The application asks for identifying and contact information; a high-school transcript and records of prior English and math classes are helpful for planning, though the college says they are not required just to submit the application. Applicants without an SSN, ITIN or tax ID can contact Admissions & Records about obtaining a BC identification number. Identity verification options and account activation can affect how quickly a new account is ready, so follow the college’s current checklist. Start with the official application steps and use the admissions office if an online verification problem blocks registration.

Placement is designed to direct students to suitable English and math courses without a general placement test. BC uses U.S. high-school GPA and coursework where available. Students who did not complete at least 11th grade in a U.S. high school, studied outside the country or lack U.S. records use Guided Self-Placement with a counselor. Multilingual applicants may choose the English for Multilingual Students sequence. Applicants to nursing and other limited-entry programs should check those departments separately: admission to the college does not itself secure a place in a selective program.

What tuition costs—and what aid can change

For 2026–27, Bakersfield College lists the California enrollment fee at $46 per unit. Twelve units therefore mean $552 in enrollment fees for a California resident before other charges. Starting Summer 2026, nonresidents pay $343 per unit in nonresident tuition in addition to the $46 enrollment fee; at 12 units, that is $4,668 before program and campus fees. The published schedule also lists a health fee of $18 in fall and spring, a $2 student representation fee, a main-campus student-center fee capped at $5 each fall and spring, and an optional $15 BCSGA services program. Lab, materials, testing and program costs can add to the bill. Ask the business office to calculate the exact load you plan to take. Check the current tuition and fee schedule.

Students apply for federal aid through FAFSA; eligible AB 540 students use the California Dream Act Application for state aid. The California College Promise Grant can waive the $46-per-unit enrollment fee for eligible California residents and AB 540 students, but it does not erase health, student-center, materials or other fees. Bakersfield College also advertises nearly 300 scholarship opportunities worth more than $500,000 each year. One KCCD portal application matches a student to awards; the college says many scholarships are not need-based, while need-based opportunities require a financial-aid application. The annual scholarship window is October 1 through February 1. Review scholarship eligibility and the portal and submit FAFSA or the Dream Act application if applicable.

English support and a route into credit classes

English for Multilingual Students (EMLS) is an academic department for English learners and bilingual or bicultural students who want to strengthen speaking, listening, reading and writing for college, work and everyday life. Its pathway includes college-level composition designed for multilingual students. The college’s placement guidance lets students choose the EMLS sequence when it fits their goals. Adult Education is a separate, tuition-free noncredit route with career-focused certificates and support that can include enrollment help, advising, tutoring, job readiness, technology support and DSPS accommodations. These courses can be a useful first step for someone building English or returning to study; they are not the same as credit-bearing degree classes. Ask the Adult Education team which current class site and next enrollment session fit your schedule. Explore the EMLS department and Adult Education services.

Programs, credits and realistic timelines

BC’s 2026–27 catalog spans transfer degrees, associate degrees, applied programs, job-skills certificates and noncredit options. Areas include agriculture and culinary arts, business, child development and education, public safety, engineering and industrial technology, health careers, arts and humanities, and social sciences. Most associate degrees require 60 applicable units; students transferring to a California State University can compare Associate Degrees for Transfer and follow the corresponding general-education pattern. Nursing is selective and its program sequence follows prerequisite and clinical requirements. EMT is a more compact example: the college lists EMTC B50 as nine units, offered in fall and spring over 16 weeks in evening or four-day schedules, and in a daytime summer format. A counselor can turn the catalog into a term-by-term plan rather than guessing from a degree title. Search the 2026–27 catalog.

Choose the site that matches the program

The Panorama main campus is the broadest starting point for admissions, financial aid, counseling, career services and college-wide programs. The Weill Institute concentrates selected downtown instruction, including EMT, Fire Technology and Business Skills & Entrepreneurship. BC Southwest has general education and transfer classes plus listed programs such as business administration, psychology, public health science, veterinary technician and administration of justice. Arvin’s educational center lists transfer and general education alongside agriculture and business, culinary arts, nursing and health, hospitality, EMT, EMLS and welding. Delano provides local instruction and student services for northern Kern and neighboring rural communities. Shafter’s learning center is a smaller community-based teaching and support location. For adult education and classes at partner or community sites, the college’s location and class-schedule pages are more reliable than assuming every course meets at the main campus. Some official pages list different addresses for adult-learning service points, so check the current schedule or call the named center before travelling. See BC’s location directory and confirm where a class meets.

Getting there and planning a campus visit

The Panorama campus occupies 153 acres in northeast Bakersfield. Drivers from California Highway 178 use the Mt. Vernon or Haley Street exits and head north. Student permits are listed at $40 for fall or spring and $30 for summer; a financial-aid student permit is also listed at $30. Parking areas, permits and drop-off zones are not interchangeable, so review the current parking page before driving. Golden Empire Transit serves Bakersfield, and the college directs riders to its bus-transportation information; a free-pass promotion on BC’s page ended in June 2026 and should not be assumed to remain active. Check current routes and fares before departure. Review parking rules and permits and check the college’s transport information.

The college’s history is part of the place: it began in 1913, moved to the 153-acre Panorama site in 1956, and has since added locations that serve the valley as well as Bakersfield. For a prospective student, the practical order is simple: identify the credential, check its prerequisites and campus, calculate tuition by residency and units, file the appropriate aid forms, complete orientation and placement, then build the education plan with an advisor. That sequence makes a first visit useful—whether you need to apply, ask about English support or find the room where a program actually meets.

Bottom line

Check current details and choose according to your budget, time and way of travelling.
