Choosing Austin Community College (ACC) starts with a distinction that can substantially change the bill: living in the service area does not automatically mean paying the “in-district” rate. ACC serves six Central Texas counties—Bastrop, Blanco, Caldwell, Hays, Travis, and Williamson—but its taxing district is smaller. Residents in the broader service area but outside that district pay an additional per-credit fee. Residency, program, and course load also affect the price.
For 2026–27, ACC publishes $85 per credit for in-district students, including $67 tuition and $18 in general fees; Texas residents outside the taxing district pay $286 per credit. A typical three-credit class is therefore $255 or $858. A 15-credit semester works out to $1,275 or $4,290. The same table lists $218 per credit for out-of-state and international students living inside the district and $419 outside it—$3,270 or $6,285 for 15 credits. These are published tuition-and-fee estimates; some labs, equipment, books, and other expenses cost extra.
The estimated annual tuition and fees for 30 credits in 2026–27 are $2,550 in-district and $8,580 out-of-district, before books, transportation, housing, and personal expenses. ACC’s full cost-of-attendance estimate is higher once those items are included. If residency is unclear, ask admissions to review your address and classification; a mailing address in Austin alone does not establish the local rate. Check the current tuition table and contact residency services before relying on an estimate.
Admission is open, but enrollment still has steps. Start with the online application, activate ACCeID and ACCmail, submit academic records when required, complete online onboarding, and confirm Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements. The TSI is not an admissions pass-or-fail exam, and ACC offers it at no charge after an admission application, unless an exemption or equivalent applies. Competitive programs—especially in health sciences—may add prerequisites, deadlines, and selection steps, so read the specific program page before choosing classes.
Students who meet federal rules can apply for FAFSA; people who are not eligible for FAFSA may still qualify for state assistance through TASFA. ACC Foundation scholarships use a shared application, alongside grants, work-study, and loans; the scholarship page lists January 15 as the opening date and May 1 as the priority deadline. ACC Free Tuition is particularly relevant locally: eligible recent graduates of area high schools, homeschool students in the service area, and Texas GED recipients within the stated dates may have tuition and general fees covered for up to three years, or five years when continuing into an ACC bachelor’s program. The benefit may not cover the out-of-district fee, books, supplies, or lab charges. Check eligibility and dates before counting on the waiver.
If you are still learning English, ACC separates two pathways. Noncredit ESL serves basic and intermediate levels and may be free for qualifying students; join the interest list and take the placement assessment. ESOL moves from intermediate English toward college readiness, with reading, writing, speaking, and grammar courses. Community Education lists a maximum of $255 per course plus a book; credit classes follow residency-based tuition and may qualify for aid. Read the English language program page to choose the right pathway, placement process, and schedule.
How long does a degree take? ACC requires at least 60 semester credits for most associate degrees, about two years full-time; six applied-science programs exceed that minimum because of accreditation and practice requirements. Certificates usually require 15 to 51 credits and can take as little as one semester, depending on course sequence and load. Occupational skills awards require 9 to 14 credits. ACC also offers completion bachelor’s degrees—BAS, BAT, and BSN—with a 120-credit minimum, as well as more than 100 transfer and workforce programs. Actual time depends on course availability, developmental classes, personal pace, and program admission.
ACC’s history helps explain its regional footprint. Austin ISD voters created the district in 1972, and the first classes began on September 17, 1973, with 1,726 students at one campus. The college now reports more than 70,000 unique students each year across credit, adult-education, and continuing-education programs, with eleven campuses and a new Lockhart Center. ACC is not a residential university; it operates as a regional network of in-person and online instruction, designed for transfer and workforce preparation.
Campus choice matters as much as the program name. Highland brings together the ACCelerator and creative arts; Eastview concentrates health sciences, dental care, and child care; Riverside offers Tesla START, engineering, and trades; Rio Grande combines specialized programs with a historic downtown building. In the north, Northridge adds fitness facilities and transfer pathways, while Cypress Creek combines labs and general courses. South Austin teaches collision repair and visual communication; Elgin has a student farm and veterinary technology; Hays houses first-responder training. Round Rock combines health and trades, San Gabriel connects to CapMetro, and Lockhart splits classes between the Ford Building and the local high school.
ACC offers free parking at campuses and centers on a first-come basis; posted signs and reserved spaces take precedence. Before travelling, confirm that your class, lab, or appointment is at that location and that the relevant service is open. Start with the official campus list, the credit and program-length catalog, financial aid, and the application page. Ask for the total cost of your program—not just the price per credit—and verify transfer or professional-licensure requirements before enrolling.
Check current details and choose according to your budget, time and way of travelling.
