Study at Polk State College: admission, tuition, aid, English and campuses in Lakeland

Polk State College gives Polk County residents a public route from high school or a GED to a transfer degree, a career credential or a bachelor’s program. The institution serves a county spread across Lakeland, Winter Haven, Bartow and Lake Wales, and that geography matters: some locations are broad campuses, while others focus on aviation, medical imaging, workforce training or public safety.

The college opened in 1964 at a former Army Air Force base in Bartow, initially serving about 1,200 students. Winter Haven became its first permanent campus in 1966; Lakeland followed in 1988. It later added the JD Alexander Center, Airside, Clear Springs and the Center for Public Safety. After a 2009 name change from Polk Community College to Polk State College, the institution began adding bachelor’s degrees. Its current offerings include A.A. and A.S. degrees, certificates, workforce training and six bachelor’s programs in nursing, aerospace, criminal justice, education and supervision and management.

For an eligible applicant with a high-school diploma or GED, Polk State describes its admissions policy as open door. The starting point is a free online application. New students then complete online orientation before registering, submit required high-school and prior-college records, address residency documentation, check whether placement testing applies and meet with an adviser as needed. Health and other limited-access programs may require a separate application and prerequisites. The college accepts entry in any term and offers online, weekend, accelerated, shift-friendly and mini-semester options; a complete file well before the intended start date gives aid and advising more time to process.

Choose the credential by its destination. The 60-credit Associate in Arts is designed for transfer, with 36 general-education credits and 24 electives; students should select a transfer major early because university prerequisites can add coursework. Associate in Science degrees focus on employment or a defined path into a Polk State bachelor’s program. Certificates are shorter and tied to occupational skills. Six bachelor’s degrees extend selected routes to four years. Sixty credits often take about two years full time, and 120 credits about four, but selective admission, clinical or flight hours, prerequisites, course availability and part-time study change the timetable. Use the catalog’s plan for the exact program rather than treating those estimates as guarantees.

The 2026–27 published lower-division tuition and required fees are $112.22 per credit for Florida residents and $409.06 for nonresidents. A 12-credit term therefore comes to $1,346.64 or $4,908.72 before books, supplies and course-specific charges. Upper-division bachelor’s courses are listed at $123.89 per credit for residents and $469.70 for nonresidents; adult vocational noncredit classes use a different rate. Fees are assessed at registration by class and can change, so these calculations are a planning baseline, not an individual bill. Ask about Florida residency classification and program charges before enrolling.

Financial help can include federal grants, work-study, loans, Florida state grants or waivers, and college Foundation scholarships. Begin with the FAFSA using Polk State’s school code 001514, then check the student portal and contact financial aid about missing documents and deadlines. The Foundation says it awards about $1.2 million annually; its scholarship application runs during a limited annual window, and awards have individual criteria. Aid is not automatic, and grants or scholarships depend on eligibility, funds and satisfactory academic progress.

Students who need English support can ask about English for Academic Purposes (EAP), available at the Lakeland and Winter Haven campuses. It builds academic reading, grammar, writing and communication for people with at least basic English; a Level of English Proficiency (LOEP) test places students into a suitable level. An adviser in Admissions guides course registration. EAP is an academic pathway rather than a beginner English class, and successful completion can prepare a student for credit-bearing study; it does not replace admission steps or a selective program’s requirements.

Location should follow the program. Lakeland Campus is a large academic and student-services hub; Airside East teaches aerospace; Airside West concentrates medical imaging; JD Alexander Center brings A.A. general education and student support to downtown Lake Wales; Clear Springs houses advanced technology and employer training; Winter Haven Campus combines academic, health-science and arts facilities; and Center for Public Safety provides specialized first-responder education.

Before applying, compare the current course schedule with the location directory, write down the program code, and ask admissions which records, placement tests and residency documents remain outstanding. Then file the free application, review the published tuition and fee schedule, submit the FAFSA, and contact an adviser if English placement, transfer credits or selective admission could affect the plan.
