Polk State College — Center for Public Safety

The Center for Public Safety is a specialized Polk State teaching site beside the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Operations Center. It houses the Kenneth C. Thompson Institute of Public Safety and instruction connected to Criminal Justice, Emergency Medical Services and Fire Science. Students may pursue associate-level study, bachelor’s pathways and certificates for Emergency Medical Responder, EMT or paramedic roles; academy entry and occupational licensing carry program-specific requirements.

The building was designed for applied training. The college lists a full-scale outdoor street scene with mock storefronts, an immersive scenario lab, classrooms, computer and study spaces, a forensic crime-scene lab, firearms simulation, EMS skills and simulation labs, defensive training space, fitness center and auditorium. These facilities support realistic practice, so visits are best arranged through an official program, academy or event rather than treated as an open walk-in attraction.

The address is 1251 Jim Keene Boulevard, Winter Haven, adjacent to the sheriff’s operations center. Polk State’s page links a campus map and location details; follow academy-specific instructions for arrival and parking. A general college application is the entry point for eligible degree seekers, while the Institute of Public Safety and selective workforce tracks publish additional standards, testing and schedules. Contact the relevant program before applying or driving to the site.
