St. Louis Community College (STLCC) was founded in 1962 to make higher education and job training available across the region. Today, its 718-square-mile district serves St. Louis City and County and portions of Franklin and Jefferson counties. Four campuses, two education centers, specialized training locations and online classes give students different starting points, but not every program is offered at every address.
Admission: who can apply and what documents are needed?
STLCC has an open-admission policy. Students can apply as degree-seeking, non-degree-seeking, transfer, visiting, returning, dual-credit or international students. The free online application is the first step; a degree-seeking applicant generally submits an official high-school transcript or GED/HiSET record, along with official college transcripts when applicable. ACT and SAT scores are optional. Depending on academic history and chosen classes, placement testing or documents that waive testing may be required. Selective programs can set additional requirements beyond general college admission.
Use the college’s application page to choose the right student type, submit records and complete the enrollment checklist. First-time students take Archer Orientation; advisors help connect placement results, prerequisites and the correct course sequence. STLCC’s general application calendar and course registration dates differ by term. As of the October 27, 2026 review, winter and spring open enrollment had begun October 26; check the current calendar before planning a start date.
What does STLCC cost per credit?
For Fall 2026 through Spring 2027, STLCC publishes a per-credit cost of $127 for in-district residents, $176 for out-of-district Missouri residents, $238 for out-of-state residents and $248 for international students. The college says its technology, activity and service fees are built into these per-credit figures. They are not a full cost-of-attendance budget: books, supplies, transportation, housing, dependent care and program-specific charges can add considerably. The tuition page provides a nine-month budget, course fees and a net-price calculator so students can estimate more than the classroom charge.
Residency matters. The in-district rate applies to residents of St. Louis City, St. Louis County and portions of Franklin and Jefferson counties within the Meramec Valley R-III and Rockwood R-6 school districts. Students must provide proof before the semester begins. STLCC lists $77 per credit for high-school students taking dual-enrollment classes and $25 per credit for dual-credit courses. Compare your rate with the current tuition and fee schedule before registering.
Financial aid and scholarships
Complete the FAFSA using St. Louis Community College’s school code 002469. The college administers federal and state grants, loans and work-study, and Enrollment Services can help students follow up on requested documents. For Spring 2027, STLCC lists November 3, 2026 as its priority FAFSA deadline. Missouri A+ funding may be available to eligible graduates of participating high schools; it is not a general award for every Missouri resident.
STLCC Foundation scholarships use an online application that matches registered students with opportunities based on program, GPA, enrollment and other criteria. Applicants first need to submit the FAFSA, apply to STLCC, activate a student account and register for classes; the scholarship portal may take 24 hours to recognize registration. The college’s Foundation application cycle generally runs from May through March. Board of Trustees scholarships are a separate set of awards, some automatically matched for eligible students after FAFSA and academic requirements are met. Read the scholarship requirements and contact Enrollment Services before counting an award toward your budget.
English classes for beginners and future college students
STLCC separates everyday English learning from college-credit preparation. Its free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are aimed at beginner and low-intermediate learners and practice speaking, listening, reading and writing in daily situations. Students do not have to be enrolled in a credit program to take these classes. The Adult Education and Literacy program also offers free ESL and high-school-equivalency preparation for adults.
English for Multilingual Learners (EML) is designed for intermediate and advanced speakers preparing for college classes, certificates, degrees or transfer. EML carries college credit and tuition charges. Non-native English speakers complete an EML placement evaluation to learn which course fits their level; the evaluation is separate from a promise of admission to a limited-enrollment program. Review the ESL and EML comparison and the placement instructions, then contact the language program if you need help choosing.
Four campuses, two education centers and a specialized science site
On the north side of the region, Florissant Valley in Ferguson pairs engineering and skilled trades with art, nursing, radiologic technology and advanced manufacturing. In central St. Louis, Forest Park places health professions, culinary arts, funeral service and cybersecurity near the city’s cultural institutions, with a Transportation Education Center for automotive, diesel and truck-driver training. Southwest of the city, Meramec offers horticulture, a greenhouse, interior design, fine arts and athletics in Kirkwood.
West County students can compare Wildwood, a sustainable 132-acre campus with transfer-oriented general education and a Health Sciences and Technology Center. Two smaller community sites add local access: Harrison Education Center in JeffVanderLou offers credit and noncredit classes, workforce training and advising; South County provides CORE 42 transfer courses, health sciences, tutoring, advising and esports south of the city. The Center for Plant and Life Sciences at BRDG Park is a specialized biotechnology teaching and workforce site with three laboratories, not a general campus.
Getting to class and planning a credential
STLCC says student parking is free at all campuses. The college’s getting-to-campus page links transit guidance and campus directions; use it with the precise building and class time because a multi-site district does not have one shared commute. The maps identify visitor and accessible parking at individual locations. Some locations sit in suburban areas and may require a different transit plan than Forest Park or the city education center.
The current college catalog lists more than 80 programs across six academic schools, with associate degrees, certificates, transfer pathways and workforce training. An associate degree is commonly planned as a two-year, full-time credential, but prerequisites, clinical courses, program admission and the frequency of required classes can alter the timeline. Before registering, compare the program map with the schedule and ask an advisor where each required class is taught. For readers looking for a first step, a short meeting with Enrollment Services can clarify admission records, placement, aid and the campus that best fits the intended course of study.
STLCC’s history reaches back to a 1962 regional vote that created a public community college district. The original campuses opened later in the decade, and the college has since added west-county and neighborhood learning sites as the region changed. The practical choice today is to match the program with the location, cost and support that fit your life, then confirm each detail with the college before enrolling.
