How to study at Spokane Colleges: admission, tuition, English and campuses

A guide to applying to SCC or SFCC, estimating tuition, seeking aid, learning English and choosing a Spokane location.

Spokane Colleges is the public district that brings together two separately accredited institutions: Spokane Community College (SCC) and Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC). SCC opened in 1963; SFCC began on the former Fort George Wright property in 1967 and became a separate college in 1970. The district now lists more than 120 fields of study, spanning transfer degrees, associate programs, certificates, career and technical education, and applied bachelor pathways. SCC is east of downtown and emphasizes workforce preparation; SFCC, west of the city, pairs transfer study with arts, theater, music and STEM. Several courses also meet at separate Spokane and Spokane Valley locations.

Applying: the general path and program requirements

Most new students begin with a free online application. SCC describes open-door general admission for high-school graduates and adults 18 or older with a diploma or GED. The process then includes placement assessment, orientation, counseling and registration. That general admission does not reserve a place in every career cohort: nursing, aviation and some health programs set prerequisites, selection criteria, tests or additional deadlines. Request transcripts early and use the specific program page for its current checklist.

For a transfer degree, compare the course plan with the receiving university’s requirements. For technical training, review the total credits, lab sequence, clinical practice and location of each class. A full-time associate pathway often takes about two years, but prerequisites, course rotations and selective admission can add time. Spokane Colleges also has applied bachelor options, so its offerings extend beyond two-year study.

Published tuition for 2026–27

The official annual full-time schedule assumes 15 credits each quarter for fall, winter and spring. For Washington residents, tuition is $5,091.90 at SCC and SFCC. Mandatory fees bring the listed annual total to $5,391.90 at SCC and $5,781.15 at SFCC; the SFCC amount includes a separate gym-renovation fee. For out-of-state nonresidents, the totals are $6,882.75 and $7,272. International-student totals are $11,942.55 and $12,331.80. Books, supplies, laboratory charges and living costs can raise a student’s actual budget.

These figures are a published estimate for a defined full-time load, not a guaranteed bill. Charges vary by credits, residency, program and waiver eligibility. The colleges’ cost-of-attendance tables separate tuition from housing, transportation, books and personal expenses. Check the current 2026–27 tuition schedule and the selected program’s fees before comparing the total cost of a credential.

Financial aid and scholarships

Students who need federal or state assistance file the FAFSA each year. Washington residents may also qualify for the Washington College Grant, College Bound Scholarship and other state programs. SCC and SFCC offer work-study, and the Spokane Colleges Foundation awards scholarships that do not have to be repaid. Its general application periods usually fall in midwinter and late summer, although individual awards can set different dates and criteria.

Contact the financial-aid office at the college you plan to attend to ask whether your file is complete, whether verification documents are needed and whether your program qualifies. People who cannot submit FAFSA may have an alternative such as Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA), subject to state eligibility rules. Scholarships are not automatic; confirm the current application and do not budget an award before it is granted.

English classes before regular college courses

SCC Adult Education offers English classes for adult immigrants and refugees. Options include morning or evening instruction at SCC, daytime classes at the Adult Education Center and online learning. Students arrange an orientation and placement test so staff can recommend the right level. The academic sequence develops reading, writing, listening and speaking; ESL Transitions helps advanced learners connect campus resources, advising and a plan for a certificate or degree. Interpreters are available for some languages.

Adult ESL is different from credit-bearing English composition. SCC publishes eligibility limits, including restrictions for certain visa categories, so call or email before enrolling. Students who complete the advanced ESL sequence can earn a certificate and prepare for college-level study. An advisor can then discuss placement, financial aid, program selection and the move into regular classes.

Choosing a campus or classroom

SCC’s Greene Street campus combines technical programs with student services, fitness facilities and specialized labs. SFCC is the west-side choice for transfer study, arts and a broad range of academic and career programs. Adult Education Center focuses on English and high-school completion. The Apprenticeship and Journeyman Training Center offers hands-on trade preparation, while Felts Field is the specialized site for aviation-maintenance training. Magnuson Building, The Lodge and Valley Center are additional class locations listed for adult high-school completion or selected instruction.

Choose a transfer or career goal, then check its admission steps, credits, estimated length and teaching site. Submit the free application, request transcripts, complete placement and orientation, and file FAFSA or ask whether a state alternative applies. If English is still developing, start with Adult Education and schedule placement. Before paying or commuting, verify residency status, scholarships, program costs and the building listed for your class.
