Durham Technical Community College (Durham Tech) is a public two-year college serving Durham and Orange counties. Founded as the Durham Industrial Education Center in 1961, it grew from a local technical school into an accredited college with more than 90 associate-degree and certificate options, university-transfer pathways, workforce training and continuing education. Its current network includes a large main campus, neighborhood campuses and specialized teaching and small-business centers. That range lets students choose between a full academic campus, a focused lab or a local service site.
Programs, credits and time to finish
The 2026–27 catalog lists programs in health and wellness, business, engineering and technology, public safety, skilled trades, education, liberal arts, culinary training and transfer study. Credentials include associate degrees, diplomas, certificates and noncredit continuing-education courses. Durham Tech describes career programs ranging from 12 to 73 credit hours, while the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science transfer degrees require at least 60 semester credits. Associate in Applied Science programs generally begin at 64 credits. A full-time student commonly plans around two years for a transfer associate degree, but prerequisites, part-time enrollment, clinical placements and course availability can extend the calendar. Each program page gives its own credit map and estimated completion time.
Durham Tech uses guided placement: general admission does not mean every student is ready for every class or automatically admitted to a selective program. Health programs and other limited-enrollment pathways can require additional prerequisites, information sessions, placement results or competitive selection. Use the current program directory to compare credits, location, estimated tuition and entry rules before choosing a track.
How to apply
New students begin with an online enrollment application and North Carolina Residency Determination Service (RDS). Applicants submit official high-school or prior-college records according to their history, complete orientation, demonstrate college readiness through accepted records or placement measures, and meet with an academic advisor before registering. Placement can use an unweighted high-school GPA, college transcripts, standardized test results or other accepted scores. High-demand programs may have separate deadlines and extra admission criteria, so students planning for nursing or another limited-entry field should apply early and follow that program’s checklist.
Students who did not complete high school can ask about Adult High School or High School Equivalency instead of assuming a degree-program application is the first step. International applicants follow separate visa, credential and English-proficiency processes. Durham Tech’s enrollment guide lays out current steps and links directly to the application and transcript instructions.
Tuition and fees for 2026–27
Durham Tech publishes $76 per credit hour for legal North Carolina residents and $268 for students classified out of state. A 12-credit fall or spring semester therefore has $912 in in-state tuition or $3,216 out of state. The published administrative fee for that load is $81 in fall and spring, making the listed term total $993 or $3,297 before books, course materials and program-specific charges. Two 12-credit fall/spring terms total $1,986 in listed in-state tuition and administrative fees or $6,594 out of state, before those additional costs. Residents who take 16 or more credits pay a capped $1,216 tuition per fall or spring term.
The charge is not the whole cost of college. Textbooks, lab kits, uniforms, background checks, licensure exams and clinical insurance can add costs, especially in health and technical programs. Continuing-education courses use their own contact-hour and course-fee schedules. Review Durham Tech’s current tuition chart and the estimated cost shown on the program page; confirm residency classification through RDS.
Financial aid and scholarships
For federal student aid, the college tells applicants to complete the FAFSA for the matching academic year and use Durham Tech school code 005448. Eligibility for grants, work-study and loans depends on federal rules and a student’s program and progress. Durham Tech Promise can provide recent graduates from eligible Durham and Orange County high schools, and qualifying local equivalency graduates, up to $1,000 a year for two years. The college says eligible students need not submit a separate Promise application, but they must meet its enrollment and academic conditions; check the current Promise page before counting on the award.
Foundation scholarships generally have a spring application period. Other routes include Golden LEAF awards for eligible residents, the Short-Term Workforce Development Grant, and SECU Bridge to Career support for qualifying industry credentials. These programs differ in who can apply, what costs they cover and when funds are available. The financial-aid office can help match an applicant to current options and explain how aid is credited to a student account.
Learning English before and during college
Durham Tech offers free, noncredit English as a Second Language (ESL) courses for non-native speakers at several locations in Durham and Orange counties. A new student takes a placement assessment to find the appropriate level; class schedules and locations change by term, and spaces can fill. The online course page lists the current schedule and a form to request registration information. These adult classes build everyday English but are not the same as credit-bearing English composition.
For students preparing to handle college-level reading, writing and research in English, the Center for the Global Learner offers English for Academic Purposes (EAP) placement and coursework. EAP is distinct from the free community ESL classes and may be part of a student’s academic pathway. Learners who need a high-school credential can also ask about adult diploma or GED/HiSET preparation. Ask the center which course fits your goal and whether it carries college credit before registering.
Choosing a campus in Durham or Orange County
The Main Campus at East Lawson Street is the broadest starting point: admissions, advising, the library, student services and many academic programs share the 79-acre site. American Tobacco in downtown Durham is a focused teaching location for culinary arts, with kitchen labs inside the historic Fowler Building. Duke Street North specializes in cosmetology and personal-care continuing education, including esthetics, manicuring, natural hair care and massage; students also provide scheduled public services through its teaching clinics.
North of downtown, Northern Durham Center offers curriculum and continuing-education classes, laboratories and a library serving students in northern Durham and Orange counties. In Hillsborough, the Orange County Campus provides an associate transfer pathway, English and adult education, science and computer labs, student-support areas and selected public-safety courses. Downtown Durham’s Chesterfield center serves entrepreneurs and employers through small-business counseling, seminars and corporate training. In Chapel Hill, Innovate Carolina Junction is a partner office and meeting site for Durham Tech’s Small Business Center, not a full catalog campus. The profiles below distinguish each address and what it is designed to do.
Getting there and planning the first visit
Vehicles parked on Durham Tech property must display a valid permit; permits are issued to students, applicants and visitors. Do not assume a parking space is permit-free. The Main Campus map labels parking, bus stops and visitor facilities, while the location directory gives building entrances and phone numbers. Current GoDurham and GoTriangle maps show connections to Durham Tech, including GoDurham Route 8 on Lawson Street and regional service to the Orange County area. Transit routes and schedules can change, so use the agencies’ live planner for the specific campus and class time.
Before travelling, confirm the building on the course schedule, especially when the class is culinary, cosmetology, ESL or a continuing-education section. A practical order is to choose a credential, read its exact credit map and special admissions steps, apply and send transcripts, complete placement, then meet an advisor and file FAFSA. If English is still a barrier, contact the Center for the Global Learner about the free ESL placement process or EAP. The campus profiles that follow help readers match each service to its current location.
Start with Durham Tech’s application steps, compare the program directory, and confirm costs through the tuition chart before registering.
