Aliada
Greek and Cypriot cooking built around mezedes, halloumi, stuffed grape leaves, sausages and whole grilled fish.
About Aliada
Aliada has served Astoria since 2002 with a Greek and Cypriot menu that gives shared small dishes a substantial role. The restaurant identifies mezedes as the heart of its cooking, alongside local and imported seafood. Its distinction becomes clearest when the diner looks beyond the familiar Greek salad or grilled fish: Cypriot sausages, stuffed grape leaves and halloumi preparations make the menu more specific. A visit can be organized around these dishes or around the house’s meat and fish meze formats, which require at least two diners.
Koupepia are grape leaves filled with pork, rice and herbs, served in a tomato-lemon broth. Shieftalia bring minced pork, onion, herbs and spices into a caul-fat-wrapped sausage cooked over a live fire. Halloumi appears grilled, but also inside baked phyllo with sesame, honey, fig jam and thyme. These are useful points of entry for someone who knows feta and souvlaki but wants to understand more of the restaurant’s Cypriot identity. Baked pasta with meat sauce, halloumi and béchamel offers a fuller main in that same direction.
The seafood side includes grilled whole branzino or dorado, grilled octopus with capers and oregano vinaigrette, and a mixed seafood grill. Vegetables are given more attention than a single side salad: roasted cauliflower combines tomato, olives and tahini, with pomegranate seeds and feta. A diner can put one of these preparations beside fish, or build an opening course from vegetables and cheese before choosing meat.
Aliada is particularly useful when sharing is part of the occasion and the group wants more than one kind of Greek dinner. Choosing a meze format makes that collective decision explicit; ordering individual dishes gives each person more control. Either approach benefits from noticing the Cypriot specialties, which provide the clearest reason to visit this particular kitchen. The menu has enough breadth for a mixed table, but its regional details keep that breadth from becoming anonymous.
