Study at Florida SouthWestern State College: admission, tuition, English and programs in Fort Myers

A public college serving Southwest Florida

Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) serves Lee, Charlotte, Collier, Hendry and Glades counties. In Fort Myers, its main academic base is Lee Campus; Corporate & Community Education operates from a separate office there. The college began as Edison Junior College in 1961, opened classes in temporary Fort Myers locations in 1962 and established its permanent Lee campus in 1965. It adopted the Florida SouthWestern State College name on July 1, 2014. Its current catalog includes transfer degrees, career programs, certificates and bachelor’s degrees.

Applying and admission requirements

For a first-time applicant, FSW accepts a high-school diploma, GED or qualifying home-education completion. The checklist calls for an online application, a nonrefundable $30 fee and official academic records. Transfer, international, bachelor’s, dual-enrollment and nondegree applicants follow distinct steps. Transcript processing can take 10–14 business days, so request records early. Start at the college’s application page and check its transcript instructions; the admissions team can clarify which applicant category fits your situation.

Degrees, careers and time to completion

The Associate in Arts (AA) is FSW’s main transfer route and requires at least 60 credits. Associate in Science degrees and certificates focus more directly on career preparation. Current options span accounting, business, construction and civil engineering technology, programming, cybersecurity, criminal justice, paralegal studies, early-childhood education, social services, nursing and allied health. Several health programs have selective admission after entry to the college. FSW lists six bachelor’s degrees: cardiopulmonary sciences, elementary education, information systems technology, nursing, public safety administration, and supervision and management. A specific example, the Business Administration and Management AS, is listed as 60 credits and two years with full-time enrollment. Other durations depend on prerequisites, course rotation, clinical placements and how many credits a student takes each term.

Florida’s 2+2 transfer agreement gives graduates with an AA and certain AS degrees a path to guaranteed admission at one of the state’s 12 public universities, under the agreement’s conditions. It does not guarantee the student’s first-choice university or admission to a selective major. Check course maps with an advisor before registering so credits fit the intended bachelor’s program.

Tuition and financial aid

FSW’s 2026–27 schedule lists lower-division AA/AS and college-preparatory tuition and required fees at $113.36 per credit for Florida residents and $432.63 for nonresidents. Bachelor’s-level courses are listed at $125.71 and $795.34 per credit, respectively. The totals include a $2-per-credit parking fee; online sections add $17 per credit, while books, supplies and program charges may add to the bill. Use the published tuition table for the program and course format you plan to take, and confirm Florida residency status before budgeting.

For FSW institutional scholarships, students must first apply and receive an ID, submit a new scholarship application each academic year and file FAFSA annually for need-based consideration. The 2026–27 application was open when checked; award amounts and eligibility vary by donor, major, merit and financial need. FAFSA can also determine eligibility for federal and state grants. Read the college’s scholarship and grant requirements and financial-aid steps; funding is not automatic.

Academic English for students who already have a foundation

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) develops reading, writing, grammar and listening/speaking for college-level study. Placement assigns students to levels 3, 4 or 5; each level contains four three-credit classes and lasts a semester. Students can meet a success advisor at Lee and receive one-to-one tutoring at the Academic Support Center. FSW explicitly says it does not offer basic English Levels 1 and 2, so the program is not an entry-level English class. To start, apply, submit high-school/GED and college records, get an FSW ID, book the EAP placement assessment and meet the advisor to register. The EAP information page links Spanish-language resources.

Fort Myers locations and services

Lee Campus brings together academic schools, library and student services, plus a fitness center for current students, faculty and staff in good standing. FSW’s map marks numbered parking lots, and the college lists several LeeTran stops on campus. Corporate & Community Education, located in Building I-116 at the same College Parkway address, handles employer training and community courses without college credit. Current examples include CPR/first aid, youth career exploration and lifelong-learning workshops. These are different services at one campus, not separate colleges; check the exact course calendar, requirements and cost before travelling.

Before choosing classes, compare the current program plan with the catalog, confirm residency classification and ask whether each course meets at Lee or online. FSW’s program directory and 2026–27 catalog provide course-specific requirements. Contact admissions, financial aid or the EAP advisor early if transcripts, transfer credits or English placement may affect your schedule.
