In Omaha, a first college decision is often a choice of route: begin a transfer degree, enter a health program, learn English, or train for a specific job. Metropolitan Community College (MCC) serves Dodge, Douglas, Sarpy and Washington counties, and spreads classes across full campuses, career centers and neighborhood learning sites. Its public mission dates to 1974, when Nebraska consolidated technical-college areas to widen access to higher education. MCC now offers associate degrees, certificates, noncredit adult education and workforce training. The right starting point depends on the credential you want and the address where its classes actually meet.
For general college credit, begin at MCC’s online Get Started application page. Choose the option for a new, returning or visiting student, select a term, create a Workday account and complete the application. MCC says applying is free. Most general admission applicants are not entering a selective program, but health-profession paths such as nursing and EMT have their own screening, prerequisites and application steps. International F-1 applicants also follow a separate process. After applying, a Success Navigator can help with placement, course registration, books and orientation. Depending on your prior grades, college work or test scores, MCC may use records already on file instead of asking for placement testing.
MCC publishes tuition by quarter credit rather than as one flat yearly average. Beginning in the 2026 winter quarter, domestic students pay $72 per quarter credit hour, whether they live in Nebraska or another state, plus a $5-per-credit facility fee. That means 15 quarter credits cost $1,155 in tuition and facility fees before books, supplies, labs or program-specific charges; a 45-credit three-quarter year would be $3,465 on that same basis. International students with F-1 or F-2 status are charged $108 in tuition plus the facility fee. Domestic learners age 62 and older pay half the standard tuition rate, and eligible Nebraska high-school students have tuition waived. MCC uses a quarter calendar: 4.5 quarter credits equal three semester credits, so check the conversion when comparing another college’s transcript.
Financial aid can reduce the amount paid out of pocket, but eligibility depends on the aid type and the student’s situation. MCC accepts the federal FAFSA under school code 004432 and offers one annual scholarship application that can match a new or returning student to eligible institutional awards. The scholarship office also lists separate opportunities, including the Walter Scott Jr. Career Pathway Scholarship for certain technical fields. Ask financial aid which documents are needed and whether a course load meets a grant or loan rule before registering. Course fees, tools, books and clinical costs can remain after tuition support, especially in health and trade programs.
Students who are still building English can choose between noncredit adult ESL and ESL classes that carry college credit. MCC’s noncredit ESL program is free for eligible adults and focuses on reading, writing, speaking, listening and everyday or workplace communication. Entry is a sequence: attend an information session, complete an assessment, take the three-week introductory class, provide required Nebraska education documents, complete a career-pathways interview and meet digital-literacy and progress-assessment requirements. MCC’s Gateway pathway joins English instruction with career preparation. For academic English, credit ESL has four levels in listening and speaking, writing and grammar, and reading and vocabulary; MCC lists those courses at South Omaha Campus. The Language and Literacy Center there helps learners with coursework, vocabulary, conversation and presentations, and offers online support to enrolled students.
Program length depends on the credential and course pace. MCC operates on quarters, and a transfer associate degree is designed as the first two years of a bachelor’s route; current MCC-to-UNO transfer plans commonly show about 90 to 96 quarter hours, with the exact total set by the major and receiving university. MCC’s international-student information gives a broader estimate of two to three years for associate degrees and 12 to 18 months for Certificates of Achievement. Workforce certificates may take much less time, while selective health programs can require prerequisite courses before the professional sequence begins. Use the program finder and the current catalog to check credits, award type, prerequisites, class location and the term when the next cohort starts. Meet a transfer advisor early if the goal is a bachelor’s degree; a course that transfers in general may not satisfy a particular major.
The four local profiles below distinguish the sites where students can get a broad set of services from those built around specific training. Fort Omaha Campus is the historic, wide-ranging site with student support and culinary, construction and technology facilities. South Omaha Campus combines health, academic and technical study and is MCC’s main location for English-language support. Applied Technology Center concentrates on diesel, utility-line and truck-driving training. Elkhorn Valley Campus serves Omaha’s western metro from a separate municipality and has a notable arts and design offering. MCC’s own location directory warns students to verify that their intended program meets at the location they plan to visit.
Getting there depends on the campus and the building. South Omaha’s Connector contains a Metro transit station, and MCC’s Pass to Class program gives credit students free bus passes under its current rules. The official Fort Omaha map also marks bus stops and parking areas. For the other centers, use the address-specific campus map and Metro’s trip planner rather than assuming that every class shares the same route. Parking details differ by site; call the location if you need accessible parking information, a drop-off point or directions to a particular lab. MCC publishes general campus hours separately from student-services hours, so check before making a trip for advising or records.
A useful first visit starts with three answers: which credential are you pursuing, which term can you start, and where will the required classes meet? Then contact admissions or the program office, compare the total course charges with aid and personal costs, and confirm whether your English placement puts you in credit ESL, noncredit adult ESL or regular coursework with tutoring. Students seeking help with tuition can get FAFSA support, review the MCC scholarship application, or ask Adult Education about ESL enrollment. Those direct contacts make the route from an interest to a workable schedule much clearer.
