Maskay guide

What services does Japan’s Embassy in Vilnius provide, and how do you arrange a visit?

A practical guide to passports, certificates, visas, registrations and appointments at Japan’s Embassy in Vilnius.

Vilnius is the post handling Japan’s consular assistance for Lithuania. Before planning a visit, separate three needs that are often confused: documents for Japanese nationals, certificates to be presented to a Lithuanian authority, and visas for travel to Japan. The Embassy publishes different routes for each and recommends appointments for routine matters.

The counter is at M. K. Čiurlionio g. 82B and is open weekdays in two blocks, 9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 1:30–5:00 p.m., excluding holidays. Appointments are arranged by phone or email; walk-ins may wait. The official page treats emergencies separately, including a lost passport when urgent travel is required. Call before travelling from another city and confirm whether your procedure requires personal attendance.

Japanese passport renewals may be started online if the applicant qualifies, but first issuance, loss, family documentation and collection each have their own rules. Include the in-person collection and any originals requested by the office in your itinerary. For certificates, first ask the recipient institution in Lithuania what format and validity it accepts; a document suitable for one process may not work for another.

Birth, marriage and nationality notifications can have specific deadlines and supporting-document requirements. The Embassy also explains residence registration: ORR Net for Japanese nationals residing abroad for three months or more, and Tabi-Reg for shorter trips. These are Japanese consular registrations; they do not replace Lithuanian permits or local registration. Update your address and contact details if you move.

For a Japanese visa, the applicant’s nationality and Lithuanian residence status determine whether Vilnius can accept the case. Lithuanian citizens and residents should check the published rules; other residents should not assume this post has jurisdiction. Our practical suggestion is one email stating procedure, nationality, deadline and city of residence, then requesting confirmation of jurisdiction, appointment, originals, translations and fees before travelling to Vilnius.
