London is home to the Consular Section of the Embassy of Japan in the UK, not a separate consulate-general. Before applying for a passport, registering a birth or requesting a visa, check which mission serves your home address. The Consulate-General in Edinburgh covers all of Scotland and specified areas of northern England, including Durham, Cumberland, Newcastle, Northumberland and Sunderland. The official list uses full local authority areas, so a nearby city name alone may not establish jurisdiction.
London’s service menu includes passports, certificates, family-register and nationality matters, overseas residence registration, voting abroad, selected My Number procedures and Japanese visas. Separate pages explain each service because documents, personal attendance and collection arrangements differ. The Embassy also says passport applications are particularly busy as of October 2026 and may take longer than usual; do not plan travel around an assumed standard processing time.
Which services need an appointment?
Online appointments are required for passport and certificate applications and collections, registrations, copies of resident-registration records for JR Pass purposes, and visa applications. Slots open up to four weeks ahead; same-day bookings are not available. Visa appointments cannot be combined with non-visa services. The system asks visitors to select the correct service category, since a booking for another procedure may not allow the requested transaction.
By contrast, the Embassy says certain overseas-voting procedures, specific My Number operations and some collections do not require a booking if visitors arrive before 4:00 p.m. Most visa collections are also walk-in, except during a midday window. Everyone entering must show photo identification and have belongings scanned at security. Confirm each exception on the current appointment page before travelling.
Getting to Piccadilly
The address is 101–104 Piccadilly, London W1J 7JT. Nearby Underground stations are Green Park, served by Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria lines, and Hyde Park Corner on the Piccadilly line. Buses 9, 14, 19, 22 and 38 serve nearby stops depending on direction. The Embassy has no visitor parking. The consular counter operates Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; telephone enquiries run 9:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m., excluding closure days.
Hiroshi Suzuki is listed as Ambassador on the official Embassy page. The consular telephone is +44 20 7465 6565 and the published email is inquiry-consulate@ld.mofa.go.jp. Residents of Scotland and the designated northern districts should contact Edinburgh rather than book in London. The linked profile collects contact and address details; this guide explains the jurisdiction split and practical difference between appointment and walk-in services.
