What consular services does Japan’s Lisbon Embassy offer, and how do you book?

Current address, appointments, passports, visas and Japanese consular services in Lisbon.

Japan’s Lisbon office is not a separate consulate general: consular services are provided inside the Embassy of Japan in Portugal. That distinction matters when looking for a counter in another city. Japan’s Honorary Consulate in Porto may be an institutional contact, but the Embassy states that passport, certificate and visa applications are not accepted there; those files are handled in Lisbon.

The Embassy moved in March 2024 to Rua Ramalho Ortigão 51, sixth floor, 1070-229 Lisbon. Some older institutional documents still mention Avenida da Liberdade, so use the current address and check the map before travelling. The main telephone number is +351 21 311 0560 and the Consular Section email is consular@lb.mofa.go.jp. The counter is open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 2:00–5:00 p.m.; appointments are required.

Visa applicants must appear in person: applications by post, relatives or travel agencies are not accepted. The Embassy accepts applications from Portuguese citizens and foreign nationals holding a Portuguese residence permit. Visitors who are not residents must apply in their country of origin or legal residence. Published checklists are indicative and vary with nationality and purpose; the Consular Section asks applicants to confirm the full list, and incomplete files are not accepted.

Japanese nationals in Portugal can use the office for new or renewed passports, travel documents after passport loss, certificates, family-register and nationality matters, overseas residence registration, overseas voting, driving-licence procedures and safety guidance. Japanese nationals who establish residence in Portugal for three months or more must file an overseas residence notice; ORR Net supports registration and changes. Each certificate has its own identity, address and intended-use evidence, so a passport alone may not be enough.

Visa timing needs room. The Embassy says a temporary-visitor visa normally takes five working days after documents are submitted, but other cases can take longer and a full appointment calendar may leave too little time before travel. The passport is held during processing, and fees depend on nationality and category; the current schedule lists the applicable period. Portuguese passport holders are exempt for qualifying non-remunerative visits up to 90 days. We could not confirm a Google score exclusively tied to the current address, so the guide does not attach a number.
