What services does Japan’s Geneva Consular Office provide, and which Swiss cantons does it serve?

A guide to Japan’s Geneva Consular Office: four cantons, passports, certificates, visas, appointments and access from Cornavin.

Geneva needs a distinction often lost in directory listings: Japan’s post is officially a Consular Office, not a Consulate-General. Its Swiss district covers the cantons of Geneva, Vaud, Valais and Ticino. Japanese residents of every other canton are directed to the Embassy in Bern. If you live across the border in the French departments of Ain or Haute-Savoie, the official site points to the Lyon consular office, while noting that Geneva may provide certain services after prior contact.

For Japanese nationals, the published menu includes passports, certificates, family-register and nationality procedures, overseas residence registration, voting abroad, My Number services and school textbooks. The office also publishes safety guidance and traveller assistance. Foreign nationals applying to travel to Japan may use the visa section if they reside within its district; the office does not process Swiss Working Holiday visas and requires a valid Swiss residence permit from third-country nationals. Long-stay, employment and other visa categories may require a Certificate of Eligibility first. The relevant category page sets the documents and timetable.

Appointments and jurisdiction boundaries

Counter service is by appointment for both Japanese-national services and visas. The website links to a booking tool and publishes direct contacts for urgent matters and questions. Before booking, check that Geneva is the responsible post, read the procedure-specific instructions and prepare originals. The office warns that incomplete visa files can delay processing, and some applications cannot be filed by post.

The office also holds outreach consular sessions. These are not unrestricted walk-in days: each announcement specifies the city, date, registration deadline and procedures available. Regular notices may cover passports, certificates, selected family-register services and overseas voting, but collection rules can be strict. A passport requested at a particular session, for example, may require the applicant to attend on the same day for issuance and delivery. Read the current event notice rather than relying only on the general service menu.

Getting to Rue de Lausanne 82

The office is on the eighth floor at Rue de Lausanne 82, 1202 Geneva. From Cornavin station, the walk towards the World Trade Organization area takes about 15 minutes. Alternatively, take tram 15 towards Nations and get off at Butini, by buildings 80–82. Walk through the arcade to no. 82, announce your visit at the intercom and take the lift. The office publishes +41 22 716 99 00 and consulate@br.mofa.go.jp as its phone and email.

The public counter and telephone lines operate Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.–noon and 2:00–5:00 p.m., excluding holidays and closures. The office is led by Akiyuki Hagino, named as its head in the institution’s 2026 greeting. The linked profile gathers contact details; this guide focuses on choosing the right Japanese mission and separating regular counter services from procedures offered only during an outreach visit.
