Admission, 2026–27 tuition, financial aid, ESL, and what each Central Piedmont location offers in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

Study at Central Piedmont: tuition, aid, English programs, and Charlotte campuses

Charlotte’s Central Piedmont Community College is not one campus with a few satellite classrooms. It is a public college with six main campuses and two additional locations, spread from Midtown to west and northeast Charlotte, and beyond the city line into Matthews and Huntersville. That geography matters: a degree plan may put general classes at one address and a hands-on lab at another. Before registering, compare the class schedule with the exact campus profile below.

The college traces its history to 1963, when the Central Industrial Education Center and Mecklenburg College merged under North Carolina’s community-college legislation. Today it lists nearly 300 degree, diploma, and certificate programs across 14 career fields, along with short-term workforce training and adult education. Associate transfer programs require at least 60 semester hours; applied degrees and certificates have program-specific credit and course sequences. A full-time student may finish some associate paths in about two years, but course availability, prerequisites, and part-time attendance change that timeline.

For 2026–27, tuition for North Carolina residents is $76 per credit hour below 16 hours, while students taking 16 or more pay a flat $1,216 per semester. The published out-of-state rate is $268 per hour below 16 hours and $4,288 at 16 or more. A 12-hour term therefore starts at $912 for an in-state student or $3,216 for an out-of-state student, before required fees, books, supplies, and program costs. The Campus Access, Parking and Security fee is $80 for students taking eight or fewer credit hours and $107 for nine or more. Residency is determined through North Carolina’s Residency Determination Service; simply living in Charlotte does not automatically establish the in-state rate.

New students establish residency, submit Central Piedmont’s online application, activate their college account and email, complete online orientation, send transcripts, meet an advisor, and pay or arrange payment. Some health and other selective programs have additional prerequisites or deadlines. To compare actual costs, use the current tuition schedule and ask financial aid to review residency, course load, lab fees, and equipment needs before registration.

Financial support includes federal aid through FAFSA, state programs for eligible North Carolina residents, work-study, and institutional scholarships. Central Piedmont advertises more than $4 million in scholarship opportunities and a payment plan that can spread tuition payments across the term. FAFSA is also part of the college scholarship application process. Eligibility and awards differ, so submit aid forms early and check the student account for documents the college still needs.

Adults who need to strengthen everyday English can apply for the noncredit ESL program. Eligible students must be at least 16, have left K–12 schooling if under 18, and not be in the United States on an F-1 or J-1 visa. The program is offered at no cost to eligible participants, lasts 16 weeks or less, has daytime, evening, and hybrid options, and includes a placement test, advising, and registration at orientation. Students on F-1 or J-1 visas, or those pursuing credit-bearing academic English, should look instead at English as a Foreign Language and its academic placement test. ESL study builds language skills; it does not replace admission or prerequisites for a degree program.

Each location has a different role. Central Campus combines performances, galleries, a teaching kitchen, public dental and eye clinics, and student services near Midtown. Cato focuses on architecture and horticulture; Harper on construction and skilled trades; Harris on cosmetic arts, barbering, and massage; Levine on transportation, health, and technical programs; and Merancas on public safety and automotive training. City View is a west Charlotte neighborhood center with a Welcome Center, while WTVI links media production and journalism study to public television. Cato, Central, Harper, Harris, Levine, Merancas, City View, and WTVI PBS Charlotte each have a separate profile with their address and campus-specific services.

Public transportation and parking vary by location. Central Piedmont directs students to the Charlotte Area Transit System for route planning, and Levine lists service by Route 51. Campus lots use college parking rules and permits; Central Campus has designated visitor spaces. Open the route link on the relevant profile, then check the term schedule, building, and current parking instructions before setting out.
