Boston-area students choosing a public two-year college can compare Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) and Roxbury Community College (RCC), both served by the Orange Line but with different campus footprints and program strengths. BHCC operates a main campus in Charlestown and a teaching campus in Chelsea; RCC’s central campus is in Roxbury Crossing, across from its namesake station. The location matters: the campus where a student applies, attends advising or takes a class may not be the only place a program uses.
Two colleges shaped by Boston’s need for wider access
Both institutions date to 1973, when Massachusetts expanded local access to public higher education. BHCC grew into a multi-campus college with more than 100 academic programs and a network that now includes Charlestown, Chelsea and teaching sites across Greater Boston. RCC opened in Roxbury and has continued to pair transfer and career programs with adult learning and community-facing services. Their present-day offerings are broader than a single degree track: a student can compare academic transfer, health careers, technical credentials and English study, while each program sets its own admission and course sequence.
Admission: open access, with extra steps for some programs
BHCC describes its policy as open admission for applicants with a high-school diploma or HiSET, including transfer students. Students seeking a degree or certificate still complete an application and acceptance process, then use placement results and advising to choose suitable first courses. English placement can include guided self-placement into introductory English or English Language Learning; math placement may use Accuplacer or accepted prior records and scores. Health and technical programs—including nursing, medical imaging, surgical technology and paramedic tracks—can require prerequisites, testing, information sessions or a separate selective application. Start with BHCC’s admission and placement steps, then check the specific program page.
RCC’s application is also an accessible starting point, but applicants must provide proof of high-school completion or an equivalent, and transfer students should arrange transcripts. Foreign academic records may need translation or evaluation. Nursing and radiologic technology have additional entry requirements. Use RCC’s application checklist, then ask admissions or advising which documents and placement steps fit your intended program and first term.
Tuition, scholarships and tuition-free options
For Fall 2026 and Spring 2027, BHCC publishes a per-credit total of $289 for Massachusetts residents and $495 for non-Massachusetts residents and international students. Twelve credits therefore total $3,468 or $5,940 before program-specific charges; students taking nine or more credits in Fall 2026 may also be billed for health insurance unless they qualify for and complete a waiver. Costs can change, and the number of credits depends on the credential and transfer credit.
RCC’s posted 2026–27 table lists $341 for one in-state credit once its general, technology and student-activity fees are included; twelve credits total $3,454. Its published nonresident table should be checked directly for the student’s load and term. Massachusetts has expanded free community college: eligible residents may receive coverage for tuition and fees at public community colleges, with book and supply support for some students. Eligibility is conditional: it can require at least six credits in an approved program, no prior bachelor’s degree, Massachusetts residency for a year or qualifying high-school completion, satisfactory academic progress and a FAFSA or MASFA. Check the state’s current eligibility rules and contact RCC financial aid to determine which award applies before treating a balance as covered. RCC also identifies Boston’s local tuition-free program and foundation scholarships; it says its scholarships are available regardless of immigration or enrollment status, although individual awards have separate rules.
BHCC participates in federal, state and private financial-aid programs. Its FAFSA school code is 011210, and the 2026–27 scholarship applications are listed on the college site; awards can require a minimum number of college credits, a GPA, financial need or continued enrollment. Review BHCC financial-aid steps and the current scholarship list before building a budget around an award.
English support and a route into credit classes
BHCC offers several distinct English paths. Adult Education has free beginner-to-intermediate classes; BELL is a noncredit option for learners building basic English; its seven-week Intensive English program provides 20 classroom hours a week and has a published tuition charge; and Academic English Language Learning is credit-bearing for intermediate-to-advanced students preparing for a degree. Academic ELL courses are six credits each, and successfully completed courses may count for up to six general-education credits. Compare BHCC’s English programs and enrollment steps, then ask whether you can take other college courses alongside ELL and what placement is needed.
RCC’s Community ESOL program offers seven levels from beginner to advanced and a free assessment for first-time students. These adult classes are a useful language-learning route, while credit-bearing ESL and degree admission follow their own placement and enrollment rules. Both colleges also provide advising and assessment; learners should ask how English placement, high-school documentation and financial-aid eligibility interact with their personal situation. The Community ESOL page has the placement request and current class registration links.
Programs, credit totals and realistic timelines
BHCC advertises more than 100 academic programs, including Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees, certificates, transfer pathways and workforce credentials. RCC lists 24 associate-degree programs and eight credit-bearing certificates, across arts, business, STEM, health, nursing, biotechnology, information systems and other fields. An associate degree is a college credential, not a high-school diploma; many programs require around 60 credits, but the exact plan is set by the program catalogue. A full-time student following a term-by-term sequence may finish in about two years, yet prerequisites, selective admission, course availability, work schedules and transfer credits can change the calendar. Short certificates have separate credit totals and completion times.
Before enrolling, compare the actual program map rather than relying on a general “two-year” label. Ask whether required labs are taught at Charlestown, Chelsea or Roxbury Crossing, whether courses transfer to the four-year institution you have in mind, and whether the published tuition estimate includes books, insurance, tools, clinical fees or other program charges. The college’s official application, tuition and English-program pages are the most useful links to start that conversation.
Three campuses, three different study days
BHCC Charlestown is the main student-services hub beside the Orange Line’s Community College station. BHCC Chelsea concentrates allied-health teaching, adult education and small-business support, with a campus shuttle linking the two sites. Roxbury Community College sits across from Roxbury Crossing station and brings academic programs, science and computer labs, arts spaces and the Reggie Lewis athletic facility together on one campus. Use the profile links for each address and directions, then confirm the exact classroom and service office in the current schedule before travelling.
