Herbert's Taco Hut
A Riverside Drive family restaurant since 1976, with breakfast tacos, asada street tacos and classic Tex-Mex combinations.
About Herbert's Taco Hut
The family restaurant on Riverside Drive
Herbert Sr. and Dora Rizk established Herbert's Taco Hut in 1976, building the restaurant from a grocery-store beginning. Its Riverside Drive address remains a useful place to encounter the San Marcos version of a full Tex-Mex meal: a taco might share the plate with a cheese enchilada, chalupa, rice and beans, while a separate street-taco order follows another format.
The Taco Dinner offers ground beef or shredded chicken in crisp, soft-corn or flour tortillas, topped with lettuce and tomato. Street tacos use three mini corn tortillas with asada and queso fresco, with onion, cilantro, green salsa and charro beans alongside. Those differences give a diner a clear choice between a classic combination meal and a smaller-tortilla order.
Breakfast has a real stopping time
The breakfast menu runs only until noon. Bean and cheese, potato and egg, chorizo and egg, bacon and egg, carne guisada and picadillo combinations cover different appetites without requiring a large plate. Migas combine eggs with corn tortillas, tomato and onion; huevos rancheros use the house ranchero sauce. Weekend opening is earlier than weekdays, which matters more than a general promise of breakfast.
Cheese enchiladas, Herbert's Special and Anthony's Deluxe are highlighted by the business among its popular dishes. Anthony's includes two cheese enchiladas, a chalupa and a fajita taco with grilled peppers and onion. The restaurant also sells its salsa separately, extending a meal into something to take home.
