Osteria
Jeff Michaud’s North Broad Street restaurant joins Northern Italian technique with hand-made pasta, a wood-burning grill and a brick oven.
About Osteria
Osteria’s cooking carries the imprint of Jeff Michaud’s years in Northern Italy. The chef refined his work in a Bergamo butcher shop and several regional kitchens before returning to Philadelphia and opening the restaurant in 2007. A wood-burning grill, a custom brick oven and hand-made pasta give the North Broad Street kitchen three complementary foundations. The range allows a dinner to move between antipasti, pizza, pasta and a substantial main course while retaining a coherent Italian character.
Chicken-liver rigatoni with cipollini onions and sage is a particularly clear expression of that identity. The dish brings offal into a familiar pasta shape and gives the diner a richer alternative to a tomato-led sauce. The current dinner selection also places ricotta agnolotti with saffron butter and lemon beside tortellini inspired by onion soup, with caramelized onion, fontina and veal broth. These preparations suggest a useful way to order: choose pastas whose fillings and sauces differ, so the meal has variation beyond the shapes on the plate. A pizza can broaden the table further, whether through the tomato-and-mozzarella simplicity of a Margherita or mushrooms and gorgonzola.
The grill and oven keep Osteria from becoming solely a pasta destination. Whole branzino with preserved lemon and gremolata, or wood-fired chicken with an apple-cider glaze, provides a different center for the meal. The Italian wine selection follows a similarly wide route through regional grapes and styles. Osteria is a strong fit for diners who want craftsmanship with freedom to compose their own dinner. Its menu accommodates a couple focused on pasta and a larger table whose interests extend to fish, meat and pizza, all within the same kitchen’s language.
