About The Modern

The Modern, contemporary fine dining at MoMA

The Modern is a two-Michelin-star contemporary American restaurant located at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. It was founded by Union Square Hospitality Group, Danny Meyer's group, and opened in 2005. Executive Chef Thomas Allan leads the kitchen, with a proposal that combines exceptional ingredients and seasonality across three distinct culinary experiences.

Three spaces, three ways to dine

The restaurant structures its offering across three distinct areas. The Modern offers a prix fixe menu with views of MoMA's Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. The Bar Room offers an à la carte menu in a lively atmosphere, with the option to sit in the Bar Room itself, the adjacent lounge, or at the marble bar. The Kitchen Table, meanwhile, allows up to four guests to occupy a privileged spot in the heart of the kitchen, with an enhanced tasting menu designed by the executive chef.

In addition, The Terrace allows guests to enjoy The Bar Room menu al fresco, with views of MoMA's sculpture garden. The terrace opens seasonally for lunch and dinner, depending on weather conditions. Reservations are accepted for lunch and no reservation is required for dinner.

Accolades and team

Since opening, The Modern has accumulated two Michelin stars, three New York Times stars, the Wine Spectator Grand Award, and four James Beard Awards, including Best New Restaurant, Outstanding Wine Service, and Outstanding Restaurant Design. The leadership team includes Thomas Allan as Executive Chef, Diana Delli Santi as Food and Beverage Director, Dan Gibson as General Manager, Jan Van Heesvelde as Beverage Director, Charlotte Brecher as Executive Pastry Chef, and Sarah Hsieh as Chef de Cuisine.

Wine and cocktail program

The restaurant has an extensive wine selection that, according to its presentation, stands out for its diversity and value, with labels from both classic and emerging regions. The Bar Room complements the offering with curated cocktails, beers, and spirits.

Design and setting

The space was designed by the New York-based architecture firm Bentel & Bentel and is presented as a refuge within the bustling Midtown neighborhood where it is located.
