About Operakällaren

Operakällaren, Swedish fine dining in Stockholm since 1787

Operakällaren is a fine dining restaurant located in Stockholm, in operation since 1787. Its cuisine follows the rhythm of the seasons and is based on the finest ingredients available at any given time. The establishment is part of Operahuset & Nobis Restaurant Division.

The house upholds the legacy of Tore Wretman, under whose leadership the restaurant became an internationally renowned institution, and continues the journey begun by Daniel Höglander. The executive chef and culinary leader is Emanuel Tärnqvist. The current approach seeks to incorporate a modern and inclusive perspective, both culturally and gastronomically.

Seasonal menus and dining experience

The menu is structured around menus that change with the seasons. The autumn à la carte menu is served Wednesday through Saturday and includes snacks, a starter, a main course, a dessert, and mignardises. It is available from 1 September to 13 November at a price of 2,400 SEK. To enhance the experience, there is a Chef's Choice Menu at 3,300 SEK per person, which can be requested upon arrival without prior booking. Wine pairings can be ordered at the restaurant.

The restaurant advises that it cannot accommodate vegetarian or vegan menus or milk protein allergies.

Christmas dinner

Operakällaren celebrates Christmas with a classic Swedish buffet, accompanied by table-served dishes such as lobster, bleak roe and stockfish. Among the drinks is the house-crafted Stenborgare, a spiced spirit with roots in the 1790s, flavored with fennel, anise, citrus, orange, and chervil.

The dinner can be enjoyed in the Grand Hall, a historic dining room, or on the Verandah, a glass-enclosed space connected to the Grand Hall with views of the waterfront and the Royal Palace. The Christmas experience is priced at 1,795 SEK and is available from 17 November to 24 December.

Winemakers' Dinner with Champagne Henriot

On 29 May at 7 PM, eighteen guests will gather in the Steinwall Room for a dinner organized together with Champagne Henriot and its chef de caves, Alice Tétienne. The evening celebrates the return of the Cuvée des Enchanteleurs, which reclaims its original name with the 2015 vintage after having been called Hemera. The dinner is among the first dedicated to its relaunch and, according to the restaurant, represents a rare opportunity to celebrate such a gathering within these historic walls before the closure for the house's extensive renovation.

The price is 4,500 SEK per person, with a menu and wine pairing featuring older and younger vintages served side by side. For that evening, allergies or special dietary requests cannot be accommodated, and each reservation is limited to a maximum of four people.

Chambre Séparée and private events

The Chambre Séparée, known as Steinwallsrummet, accommodates up to 18 guests around an oval table. The room pays tribute to Georg and Gustaf Steinwall, responsible for the reopening of Operakällaren in 1895, and offers a modern take on Swedish gastronomy. The menu consists of three courses, complemented by hors d'œuvre and mignardise, with many dishes served family-style. The price is 2,800 SEK per person, with optional wine packages. The room can be private or open to the dining room.

For groups of 18 or more, the restaurant offers private dinners and various spaces within the house.

Nobiskällaren, historic wine cellar for private gatherings

Nobiskällaren opened in 1961 as Sweden's first temperature-controlled wine cellar and houses some of the world's finest vintages. Legend has it that Tore Wretman sprayed wine on the walls and ceiling for six months to achieve its distinctive patina and aroma. It preserves rare pieces from Wretman's era.

The cellar is now offered for private gatherings where wine takes center stage. It includes an exclusive three-course menu, complemented by hors d'œuvre and mignardise, paired with selected wines. It is designed for groups of 10 to 16 guests, with a price from 5,000 SEK per person, pairing included.
