About Consular Section, Embassy of Japan in Russia
The Consular Section is within the Embassy compound at 27 Grokholsky Pereulok, but its entrance is on the Astrakhansky Pereulok side. It receives Japanese nationals’ enquiries about personal documents and administrative procedures abroad; the Embassy publishes separate access details and counter hours so visitors can distinguish it from the main entrance.
Its official service menu includes new and renewed passports, replacement procedures after loss or theft, emergency travel documents for return to Japan, residence, signature and civil-status certificates, certified translations of Japanese public documents, police certificates, family-register filings, nationality matters, residence notifications and overseas voting. Several procedures have downloadable checklists and specific eligibility rules. Signature certification requires the applicant to appear before a consular officer; online passport filing requires a properly activated electronic residence registration.
Online and paper passport applications are both available, although new passports are made in Japan and take about a month to reach Moscow. The Embassy also cautions that a valid Russian visa may need to be transferred from the old passport to the new one. Ordinary Japanese visa applications belong at the Japan Visa Application Centre in Olympic Hall, 16 Olimpiyskiy Prospekt, rather than at this office. The centre handles submission and collection under its own published hours, appointment process and fees.
The Embassy lists a consular phone number and email, weekday counter hours and a separate after-hours emergency contact. We do not show stars or a review count: we could not confidently separate a Google Maps listing for the Consular Section from other units in the compound. Before visiting, check which authority handles the procedure, the current document checklist and closure dates; the Consular Section cannot replace Russian authorities for local visa or registration transfers.
