Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant 2026–27: private colleges and spring deadline

VTAG helps Virginia residents attending participating private institutions full time. The fall 2026 priority deadline was September 15; spring-only applicants have a December 1, 2026 state deadline.

The Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG) is state aid for Virginia residents attending an eligible private institution full time. It is not the same as aid for public universities or a promise to pay all tuition. The annual participating-college list and award amount depend on funding, enrollment, and the state allocation.

Applicants must be Virginia residents enrolled full time at a participating private college in an eligible degree program. The institution certifies enrollment and submits the application; check whether a separate tuition-equity category applies. Private attendance alone is not enough: verify the school, campus, and institution code in SCHEV’s guide.

For 2026–27, the fall priority deadline was September 15, 2026. Students starting only in spring have a separate December 1, 2026 date. If you attend both terms but missed the fall filing, contact financial aid immediately: do not assume you can switch to the spring-only category or receive retroactive aid.

VTAG is generally an annual amount that reduces attendance cost, not a reimbursement of all tuition. Ask whether it is split by term, how it interacts with institutional aid, and what credit or progress rules apply. Your college’s award letter confirms the amount and credit date; the state page provides general rules only.

Complete the college’s application, verify the office submitted it, and keep confirmation. Do not reuse prior-year dates for the next cycle. The VTAG profile summarizes timing and eligibility, and the SCHEV profile identifies the agency coordinating colleges and state aid.

Before budgeting, request a written offer separating tuition, mandatory fees, housing, meals, books, and transportation. State grants often reduce only eligible charges and may change after Pell or other scholarships are applied. Do not commit money based on a chart maximum.

Your campus office should confirm missing documents, institutional eligibility, and disbursement timing. The program profile expands on the criteria; the public-agency profile links to applications, deadlines, and official help.

Research checked on October 12, 2026 against official or institutional sources. Past deadlines are identified, and eligibility is distinguished from an actual award. Confirm the cycle, your file, and available funds with the agency and your college financial-aid office.

Bottom line

VTAG may support tuition at eligible private colleges, but the campus submits the application; distinguish the fall deadline from spring-only filing.
