Virginia G3: community-college aid for high-demand career programs

G3 may reduce costs for residents in approved Virginia community-college programs. Eligibility depends on income, residency, credits, and field; each campus maintains its own list.

Get Skilled, Get a Job, Get Ahead (G3) connects Virginia community colleges with priority career sectors. It may reduce eligible tuition and fees, but not every major, campus, or certificate qualifies. Check the college’s list for the exact program before enrolling.

State guidance includes in-state tuition residency, household income within 400% of the federal poverty level, at least six credits, and an approved program in a designated sector. FAFSA determines other aid; students unable to use it should ask about the state alternative application. Some supplemental support depends on Pell or full-time enrollment.

G3 works alongside Pell and other funds under the institution’s aid order. Do not budget it for housing, meals, transport, or books; request an estimate separating tuition, fees, tools, and supplies. The same career field may include different credentials, and only campus-listed programs qualify.

Start with admission, FAFSA or the alternative application, and a review with financial aid. Ask whether courses count toward the credential, whether six credits meet your term requirement, which charges qualify, and when the local application is due. Residency alone does not create an award.

G3 is a specific training pathway, not a universal scholarship for every Virginia college. Request the remaining balance in writing. The G3 profile explains the limits, and the VCCS profile helps locate participating campuses.

Before budgeting, request a written offer separating tuition, mandatory fees, housing, meals, books, and transportation. State grants often reduce only eligible charges and may change after Pell or other scholarships are applied. Do not commit money based on a chart maximum.

Your campus office should confirm missing documents, institutional eligibility, and disbursement timing. The program profile expands on the criteria; the public-agency profile links to applications, deadlines, and official help.

Bottom line

G3 eligibility depends on program and campus; confirm the code, credits, and covered charges before enrolling.
