How to study at Tri-C in Cleveland: admission, tuition, ESL and campuses

A guide to applying to Cuyahoga Community College, estimating 2026–27 tuition, finding aid and choosing among its Cleveland learning sites.

In Cleveland, Cuyahoga Community College—usually called Tri-C—has a footprint that reaches beyond one central campus. Its Metropolitan Campus sits in the Campus District just southeast of downtown, while specialized teaching locations bring culinary practice, advanced technology, manufacturing and restaurant operations into different buildings. That distinction matters when you compare programs: the college lists more than 200 career and technical fields, but a particular course, lab or student service may be assigned to one location or offered online. The city also has a broader regional network of Tri-C campuses in Parma, Highland Hills and Westlake; those are outside Cleveland city limits.

The starting point is a free online application. Tri-C publishes separate enrollment checklists for new, returning, transfer, international and other student types. For new students, the sequence includes an application, financial planning, placement and transcripts, counseling and orientation, then registration and payment. The college says most people age 18 or older are eligible for most programs, but admission to a particular career pathway can require additional steps. Health programs such as nursing and dental hygiene have separate, selective requirements, so general admission does not guarantee a seat in those majors. Health programs such as nursing and dental hygiene have separate, selective requirements, so general admission does not guarantee a seat in those majors. Start the application and choose the correct term, then check the checklist for your student type.

The 2026–27 tuition table gives a clear per-credit comparison. For fall 2026 through summer 2027, the instructional and general/technology charges total $139.54 per credit for Cuyahoga County residents, $169.08 for other Ohio residents and $306.19 for out-of-state residents. A 12-credit semester therefore starts at $1,674.48, $2,028.96 or $3,674.28, respectively, before the separate institutional fee of $70 for students taking 12 or more credits. Online courses add $10 per credit, and some programs, labs, tests or materials carry additional charges. These are published tuition calculations, not an average bill or a promise of final cost. Check Tri-C’s current fee table and supplemental charges before building a schedule.

Financial aid can change the amount a student pays, but each program has its own rules. Tri-C’s FAFSA code is 003040. Students may qualify for federal Pell Grants, Ohio College Opportunity Grant support, other state programs, scholarships from the Tri-C Foundation or workforce-training awards. The college’s scholarship materials describe more than 200 opportunities and note that common conditions can include a minimum GPA or enrollment level; the award page for each scholarship controls. Complete the FAFSA and scholarship application early, ask financial aid to review the student’s circumstances, and do not treat a grant or scholarship as guaranteed until the college posts an award. Review federal, state and college aid options and search Tri-C scholarships.

Students who want to strengthen their English before taking composition courses can use Tri-C’s college-credit ESL sequence. Placement testing includes an oral interview, and the result determines whether a student begins at the basic level or a later level. The current sequence lists reading and writing, grammar, and speaking and listening courses; completion of all Level III courses—or the approved accelerated sequence—opens the route to ENG-1010, College Composition I. Classes are offered at several Tri-C campuses, including Metro, and international students follow additional visa and language-document rules. The number of terms depends on placement, course load and the schedule. See the resident ESL application steps and compare the levels and credit hours.

Tri-C’s broad catalog mixes transfer-oriented associate degrees with applied programs and shorter workforce certificates. Nursing, recording arts and technology, emergency medical technology, electronic/electrical engineering technology, dental hygiene and health-information programs are among the fields associated with Metro. At Public Square, the Hospitality Management Center concentrates on culinary arts, restaurant and food-service management, and hotel, destination and event management. Advanced manufacturing and technology training range from robotics, welding and construction labs to short courses that the college says may take 10–18 weeks; health-industry workforce certificates can run from a few weeks to six months. A nursing AAS sequence in the 2026–27 catalog totals 61 credits and includes selective entry steps. These examples show why the program catalog—not a general two-year label—should determine the expected schedule. Search programs and certificates and confirm where each one meets.

The central Metro site has library and tutoring resources, counseling, financial aid, testing, accessibility services, a transfer center, health-care labs, a gymnasium, outdoor track and pool. It opened in 1969 as Tri-C’s first permanent campus; the college itself began in 1963 in a downtown Cleveland school building. Drivers can reach Metro from I-71, I-77 or I-90, and the college says student parking is available in designated lots. Greater Cleveland RTA maps identify the campus near routes 11, 14 and 15 and the HealthLine corridor; schedules change, so plan the trip for the day and entrance you need. The Hospitality Center, ATTC, Manufacturing Technology Center and Jerry Sue Thornton Center are distinct learning sites within Cleveland, each with its own address and program focus. Use the links below to compare them before visiting.

Cuyahoga Community College — Metropolitan Campus is the broad downtown campus for academic support, transfer planning and health, engineering and creative-arts programs. The Hospitality Management Center at Public Square trains students in kitchens and hospitality operations. The Advanced Technology Training Center focuses on hands-on construction, welding, robotics and information technology instruction. The Manufacturing Technology Center houses workforce and manufacturing education, while the Jerry Sue Thornton Center and Alere give hospitality students experience in a working student-run restaurant.

A useful visit begins with one concrete question: which building hosts the program or service you need? Tri-C lists campus maps, location directions, student services and program contacts online. Ask admissions about transcript evaluation, residency classification and placement; ask the department about a selective program’s prerequisites and application window; and request a term-specific cost estimate from the bursar. That small amount of preparation can save a cross-town trip and make a broad catalog easier to navigate.
