Columbus and Franklin County: how to find meals and care for older adults

Senior Options, COAAA, and LifeCare Alliance offer separate routes for home help, meals, transportation, and respite.

Columbus relies on county and regional systems to help older adults who need food, household support, or caregiver relief. Franklin County Senior Options can coordinate subsidized services; COAAA explains other Central Ohio pathways; LifeCare Alliance delivers meals at home and in dining centers. Before calling, consider whether the person can leave home and whether they already have Medicaid or another case-managed benefit.

For home support, Senior Options requires age 60 or older, Franklin County residency, and a demonstrated unmet need. Services may include homemaking, personal care, home-delivered meals, transportation, an emergency response system, adult day care, supplies, and minor repairs. The program is funded by a local levy and uses financial verification and a sliding fee scale.

Enrollment can start online or by calling (614) 525-6200. Senior Options takes calls weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; the Office on Aging lists 280 East Broad Street, Room 300. Assessment and case management may include an in-home visit. Ask for a written service list, hours, and cost share so the family knows exactly what the program authorized.

The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging serves eight counties and coordinates providers, enrollment, and cases. It can guide families through Senior Options, PASSPORT, Medicaid care, transportation, nutrition, and caregiver support; PASSPORT has separate functional and financial criteria. Call toll-free at 1-800-589-7277 or contact its Columbus office. It is useful when the older adult lives outside Franklin County or a family is comparing regional and state options.

If food is the main need, the nonprofit LifeCare Alliance accepts inquiries from older adults and people with medical challenges or disabilities. For home-delivered meals without a case manager, its page requires physical or cognitive limits that make meal preparation unsafe and residence in one of five counties, including Franklin. Some clients receive funder-supported meals while others pay privately; intake determines which route applies.

Someone who can leave home can also ask about LifeCare Alliance Senior Dining Centers: they serve adults 60 and older, suggest a $1.50 contribution, and say no one is turned away for inability to pay. Some sites offer transportation by reservation. Older Americans Act and Ohio Medicaid programs fund parts of the network, but Medicare generally does not cover ongoing nonmedical daily care. Ohio’s Area Agencies on Aging directory, the federal Eldercare Locator, and Medicare’s coverage page help distinguish the right doorway.

When requesting help, give the address, age, mobility, ability to cook, health coverage, approximate income, and support already available. Ask who conducts the visit, what it costs, whether a waitlist applies, and how to request review. One person may receive food from a nonprofit and homemaking through a different program, but each service requires its own approval.
