Broward County: where to find help caring for an older adult

The local aging agency, county, and Florida state programs offer separate paths for meals, in-home support, respite, and caregiver help.

In Broward County, finding help starts by separating three roles: the county assesses and administers local services, the regional aging agency guides residents to providers, and Florida sets eligibility rules for state programs. The need may be food, transportation, respite for a caregiving spouse or daughter, or personal help that allows someone to stay at home; each route has a different assessment.

For functional support at home, the Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services Division is a direct entry point. Community Care for the Elderly may serve people age 60 and older whose limitations put them at risk of premature nursing-home placement. After assessment, the county may authorize case management, homemaking, personal care, respite, adult day services, and an emergency alert system. Copayments use an income-based sliding scale.

When a family is unsure which program fits, the Area Agency on Aging and Broward ADRC provides guidance in English, Spanish, and Creole. Its information line can help locate meals, transportation, home support, Medicare counseling, and address-specific services. The organization also takes inquiries for home-delivered meals for homebound older adults; availability and intake are confirmed by phone.

A third path is Florida’s Community Care for the Elderly program, which sets state age and functional-assessment rules and is delivered through regional agencies. CCE may address community needs such as meals, transportation, respite, and homemaking. Broward residents start with their local ADRC; people in other counties can use the statewide Elder Helpline. CCE is different from Medicaid Long-Term Care, which has medical and financial review, and from Medicare, which does not cover much ongoing nonmedical daily care.

Funding also affects cost. The regional agency says some federally funded programs accept voluntary contributions, while CCE and the Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative may assess income-based copayments. Medicaid can open long-term services to people meeting additional criteria, but waitlists and funding change. Check Florida’s Department of Elder Affairs CCE page, the state Medicaid LTC guide, and the federal Eldercare Locator.

Before calling, have the address, age, mobility, diagnosis, current caregiver, and tasks that cannot be done without help. Ask who conducts the assessment, whether a waitlist applies, what financial or medical documents are needed, and who confirms the final cost. An information call is not an authorization; the administering agency must approve service before the family relies on it.

Bottom line

In Broward, start with the local ADRC for guidance or call the county when an in-home care assessment is clearly needed.
