About Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services Division

Broward County’s Elderly and Veterans Services Division is the first assessment point for several routes of help at home. Rather than making a separate application to every program, the county asks people to call Central Intake and explain the need; staff screen the situation and identify which service and documents may apply.

Community Care for the Elderly serves adults age 60 and older with functional limitations who may be at risk of premature placement in a care facility. After assessment, services may include case management, homemaking, personal care, caregiver respite, an emergency alert system, adult day care, and consumable medical supplies. The county says copayments are set on a sliding scale based on income.

The division also describes Home Care for the Elderly for low-income adults age 60 and older who live with a full-time caregiver and are at risk of needing residential care. It may provide case coordination, assistance, and subsidies for specialized services; it is not a guaranteed cash benefit or a uniform service for every household. For Alzheimer’s or dementia, its Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative may add respite, caregiver groups, and supplies, subject to diagnosis and funding criteria.

The entry number for older-adult services is (954) 357-6622. The county lists offices in Plantation and regional centers; call first and ask for an older-adult services assessment, especially when food, safety, or caregiver support is urgent. Veterans services follow a separate track and may serve former service members of any age, but benefits and eligibility are assessed independently.

When speaking with Central Intake, describe which tasks the person cannot do, how long the difficulty has lasted, whether a caregiver is available, and what change could put the person’s ability to remain at home at risk. The county says eligibility depends on age, diagnosis, and available funds. For meals, transportation, or guidance on federal and state programs, Broward’s Area Agency on Aging has a separate information and referral line.
