New Jersey Garden State Guarantee: aid for the final years of college

The Garden State Guarantee may reduce net tuition for third- and fourth-year students at New Jersey public universities. Check income, credits, FAFSA, and the cycle deadlines.

The Garden State Guarantee (GSG) targets third- and fourth-year students at New Jersey public four-year institutions. It works after grants and scholarships: the program may cover eligible net tuition and fees, not every college expense. “Tuition-free” should be read alongside housing, food, books, and transportation costs, which do not disappear with an award.

For the current cycle, HESAA lists household income up to $65,000, New Jersey residency, pursuit of a first bachelor’s degree, and 60 to 128 earned credits among the criteria. Students must enroll full time, at least 12 credits each semester. Participating colleges determine charges and calculate the remaining balance after other aid.

Before budgeting, compare your cost of attendance with the college’s written financial-aid offer. A student within the income range may still owe uncovered fees or indirect expenses. Ask how transfer credits, repeated courses, enrollment changes, and outside scholarships are treated; keep the decision and supporting documents.

HESAA’s calendar listed September 15 for fall 2026, now past, and February 15 for spring 2027. Submit FAFSA or the applicable alternative and confirm the college received all documents. The GSG profile explains the grant, while HESAA links to official applications and dates.

Before budgeting, request a written offer separating tuition, mandatory fees, housing, meals, books, and transportation. State grants often reduce only eligible charges and may change after Pell or other scholarships are applied. Do not commit money based on a chart maximum.

Your campus office should confirm missing documents, institutional eligibility, and disbursement timing. The program profile expands on the criteria; the public-agency profile links to applications, deadlines, and official help.

Bottom line

GSG targets upper-division students at public colleges; confirm credits, net charges, and dates with HESAA and your campus.
