Moving to Michigan with a car: title and registration must start immediately

Michigan does not give a new resident a month to settle in before changing vehicle papers. The Secretary of State says residents must apply for a Michigan driver’s license or ID, vehicle title and registration as soon as they establish residency; state law provides no grace period. Before driving to an office, schedule a visit and assemble the ownership documents and Michigan No-Fault insurance proof. An out-of-state registration that is still valid does not replace the Michigan application.

Take the title and identify every owner

To convert a title, bring the original out-of-state title, proof of identity and proof of Michigan No-Fault insurance to a Secretary of State branch. If more than one owner appears on the title, Michigan generally requires all named owners to appear for the title application. When one cannot attend, the state’s appointment-of-agent form lets another owner sign on that person’s behalf. Check the form and signature requirements before the visit so a missing co-owner does not force a second trip.

A lender-held title has a separate route. The state says a new resident can bring the out-of-state registration, if it expired less than 90 days ago, or proof of the out-of-state title, together with Michigan insurance. Michigan may issue a “Foreign Ownership—Registration Only” registration so the vehicle can receive Michigan plates while the lender keeps the title; the old state’s title remains the ownership document. Ask the branch what proof is acceptable for your lender and vehicle before the appointment.

The office visit does not combine every new-resident task

Michigan’s new-resident instructions also require a state driver’s license or ID. For a license transfer, the Secretary of State says to bring the required identity and residency documents; the license process includes a vision test and photo, while a written test is not required for a qualifying transfer. The vehicle file has its own title, insurance and fee requirements. A pre-application completed when booking can reduce time at the counter, but it does not issue the title or plates by itself.

If the vehicle is financed, leased or has owners who cannot be present, call or check the state’s document list before the appointment. Keep proof of insurance active during the changeover and confirm that the Michigan policy begins before the old policy ends. Because there is no statutory registration grace period, do not treat a scheduled appointment far in the future as permission to continue indefinitely on the old registration. Contact the Department of State if the title is delayed or the vehicle cannot be registered in the ordinary way.
