I moved to Fargo: do I need to change my out-of-state car insurance?

A car policy that covered a road trip to Fargo does not automatically answer what happens after you move there. The North Dakota Insurance Department says a vehicle registered and operated in the state must carry specific liability, uninsured-motorist and no-fault coverage. The required minimums include $25,000 bodily-injury liability per person and $50,000 per crash, $25,000 property-damage liability, uninsured-motorist limits of $25,000/$50,000, underinsured-motorist coverage at least equal to the uninsured limits, and $30,000 of basic no-fault or personal-injury protection per person. These are state floors, not a recommendation that the minimum is enough for every driver.

Call the insurer that issued your current policy and give it your actual Fargo address, the date of the move, where the vehicle will usually be kept, and every regular driver. Ask whether the company is licensed to insure a vehicle garaged in North Dakota and whether it will endorse or replace your policy. Request the answer and effective date in writing.
