The 2025 minimums still govern in 2026
Massachusetts requires four compulsory coverages. For policies written or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, the minimum bodily-injury liability to others is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident; property damage liability is $30,000. Personal Injury Protection is $8,000, and bodily injury caused by an uninsured auto is $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident. These are legal floors, not a recommendation that the minimum will cover every serious crash. The state Division of Insurance describes optional coverages and explains that compulsory coverage does not repair damage to your own vehicle.
Give the insurer your new Massachusetts residence and where the vehicle will be kept, identify every regular household driver, and ask whether the policy and declarations meet the Commonwealth’s current limits. A price quote or a card showing an out-of-state address is not the same as the RMV-required stamped Massachusetts application. Ask for the effective date and written proof, then coordinate cancellation of the former policy so there is no uncovered interval.
Verify the agent’s license and compare the full policy
The Massachusetts Division of Insurance provides an online lookup for insurance producers and agencies. Use it to check that the person or firm handling the vehicle policy holds an active Massachusetts license. Then compare quotes with the same drivers, limits, deductibles and optional coverages. Ask whether collision or comprehensive protection is appropriate for the car’s value or a lender’s contract, because the compulsory package does not pay to repair the policyholder’s own car.
Massachusetts uses a no-fault PIP system for defined medical costs and lost wages, while bodily injury liability and uninsured-auto coverage address different risks. These labels should not be collapsed into one “full coverage” price. If a broker presents a low premium, ask for a written coverage page and confirm that each required amount appears. The RMV will not issue the Massachusetts registration without the insurance information and stamp. A licensed agent’s involvement is therefore a required part of this state transfer, not just a shopping convenience.
