Compare the policy with Maine’s requirements
Maine’s Bureau of Insurance lists minimum bodily-injury liability of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident, plus $25,000 for property damage. A combined single limit of $125,000 also meets the stated minimum. The state separately requires at least $2,000 per person in medical-payments coverage. That coverage addresses medical expenses for you and your passengers, while liability coverage addresses injuries or property damage you cause to others.
Maine also requires uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage of at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident. If the liability limits are higher than those minimums, the UM limits generally must match unless the policyholder rejects the higher UM amount in writing. A policy from another state may use a different set of limits or coverage structure. Do not compare only the largest number printed on the card: ask the insurer to confirm each required component and provide a document acceptable for Maine registration.
Coordinate insurance and registration
Maine asks new residents to register and convert the title within 30 days after establishing residency. Proof of insurance is part of the registration packet, alongside the out-of-state registration and other title documents. The insurer may need to change the policy state, rewrite the contract or confirm an existing policy’s coverage; that depends on the policy and company, so get the answer directly from the carrier or licensed agent. Ask when the Maine policy becomes effective and how the company will handle the old policy so the coverage dates do not leave a gap.
The state Bureau of Insurance cautions that statutory minimums are only a starting point and may not protect a household’s assets in a serious crash. A move is a good moment to compare the policy’s liability limit, deductibles, medical-payments benefit, UM coverage and any optional protection without assuming that the cheapest state minimum is adequate. Keep the declarations page or insurance card with the registration papers, and confirm the insurer’s legal name and vehicle identification number are correct. Maine’s insurance regulator publishes the required limits; your carrier must answer whether it can insure your new garaging address and issue proof for the registration.
