Michigan Achievement Scholarship 2026–27: SAI, FAFSA, and up to $27,500 over five years

The scholarship may reach $5,500 per year at participating public or private colleges. This guide explains the maximum SAI, residency rule, final 2026–27 eligibility date, and full-time enrollment.

The Michigan Achievement Scholarship helps recent high-school graduates pay for public universities, private colleges, and certain community colleges in Michigan. It may reach $5,500 per year for up to five years, but each amount depends on institution, tuition, other grants, and need. It is different from the Tuition Incentive Program (TIP), which serves some students who met a Medicaid condition.

2026–27 rules include an SAI of $30,000 or less, Michigan residency since at least July 1 before the award year, citizenship or eligible status, high-school graduation in 2023 or later, and enrollment within 15 months. Students must file FAFSA, attend full time, and maintain satisfactory progress; a federal student-loan default can prevent payment. The class of 2026 must enroll by fall 2027.

The final date to become eligible for the current cycle is August 6, 2027, according to the state’s 2026–27 manual. Some prior 2023–24 recipients may use a manual exception to the SAI rule if they file the 2026–27 FAFSA. Do not apply that exception to a new student. Missing FAFSA, a residency change, or part-time enrollment can block eligibility.

Complete FAFSA and list the institution. Michigan Student Aid and your college review residency, diploma, credits, and financial information; additional portal tasks may appear. The $27,500 five-year maximum is a theoretical total, not an upfront payment or promise to cover housing and all charges.

If you have filed, ask financial aid to verify the year’s award and the deadline for your graduation cohort. For the next cycle, submit FAFSA when it opens instead of waiting until August. The Achievement Scholarship profile explains requirements, and the Michigan Student Aid profile identifies the agency and aid process.

Before budgeting, request a written offer separating tuition, mandatory fees, housing, meals, books, and transportation. State grants often reduce only eligible charges and may change after Pell or other scholarships are applied. Do not commit money based on a chart maximum.

Your campus office should confirm missing documents, institutional eligibility, and disbursement timing. The program profile expands on the criteria; the public-agency profile links to applications, deadlines, and official help.

Research checked on October 12, 2026 against official or institutional sources. Past deadlines are identified, and eligibility is distinguished from an actual award. Confirm the cycle, your file, and available funds with the agency and your college financial-aid office.

Bottom line

The maximum is not automatic: confirm SAI, residency, full-time enrollment, and your cohort deadline with Michigan Student Aid and your college.
