Jefferson Community & Technical College (JCTC) is a public, open-access college in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. Its six campuses connect Louisville with regional locations in Bullitt, Carroll and Shelby counties. Jefferson Community College opened in 1967; the district’s technical-school roots go back to 1953, and the present institution formed through the 2005 merger of Jefferson Community College and Jefferson Technical College. The college offers career, transfer and technical paths. The location you choose matters because nursing, aviation maintenance, skilled trades and student services are spread across different addresses.
Applying: college admission and career selection are separate
Jefferson describes its admissions policy as open access. First-time students and people returning after one or more semesters submit an application; students can apply as first-time, transfer, visiting or nondegree applicants. The college admits high-school graduates, people who have earned or are eligible to pursue a high-school equivalency credential, and high-school students who qualify for dual enrollment. Its online application is free. Applicants should prepare an email address and the names and addresses of schools and colleges attended; official transcripts and placement steps may also be required. Health and other selective programs add prerequisites, testing, a separate application or limited cohort admission. Start on the official application page and then check the rules for the specific program.
Tuition and fees in 2026–27
JCTC’s posted rate is $198 per credit for Kentucky residents and $270 for nonresidents; dual-credit students pay $99. The mandatory fee is $8 per credit. Online classes may add a $20-per-credit distance-learning charge. For 12 credits in each of two semesters, the college’s in-state estimate is $4,752 in tuition plus $192 in mandatory fees, before books, transport, housing, personal costs and program-specific charges. Its full cost-of-attendance estimate for an in-state student living off campus is $19,323; that includes indirect expenses that are not billed by the college. The rate page also lists reciprocity for residents of several Indiana counties. Check the current tuition table for your residency category and course load.
Financial aid and scholarships
The college directs students to complete the FAFSA each year and lists grants, scholarships, work-study, loans and employer-linked Work and Learn opportunities. Jefferson’s own scholarship application combines a KCTCS General Application with a Jefferson Conditional Application. Its page says the 2026–27 application is closed and the next cycle opens November 1, 2026; applicants must also submit the FAFSA by the posted priority date. Kentucky residents can examine Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship for approved workforce credentials in designated high-demand fields. Eligibility includes state residency, citizenship or permanent-resident status, and other conditions. The award fills eligible tuition and fees remaining after other aid, depends on available funds and caps its fee contribution. Review the college scholarship page and state Work Ready Kentucky information before counting on assistance.
English support for students building academic language
Jefferson’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program uses the CAMLA placement test and moves students through four developmental levels. Each level generally lasts a 16-week semester; schedules and formats vary, and the summer term is limited to eligible high-intermediate students. ESL courses carry three or four credits and are charged at the same per-credit rate as other classes. They do not award a transferable ESL credential. Students enrolled as nondegree applicants who take only ESL courses are not eligible for federal aid. After high-intermediate ESL, students may enter college-level English such as ENG 101 and ENG 100 when they meet placement requirements. Ask the program about the placement exam, class format and next enrollment date; the ESL sequence is published online.
Six locations, with different academic strengths
Downtown is the largest campus, with more than 8,000 students each semester and nursing, allied health, business, culinary and transfer courses. The Technical Campus, seven blocks west, concentrates automotive training, carpentry, HVAC, plumbing and welding. Southwest pairs aviation maintenance with information technology, mechatronics and engineering technology, and offers 60-credit Associate in Arts and Science transfer degrees. In Shelbyville, more than 150 classes each term support credentials and transfer, alongside manufacturing, machining, industrial maintenance, welding and automotive study. Bullitt County in Shepherdsville provides general and adult education as a regional access point. Carrollton lists engineering technology, applied process technology and transfer study. These sites are in separate communities, not a group of buildings in central Louisville.
Getting to class and choosing a campus
Jefferson publishes a distinct address and driving directions for each campus. Downtown has student lots and a visitor garage at the Jefferson Educational Center; the college states a 30-minute visitor limit there. Student parking on college property requires a permit, listed at $25 per term. The Technical Campus identifies a student lot behind Building A. TARC serves Louisville, but use its current route finder because one bus route will not fit all six sites. Jefferson schedules tours at each campus. Before enrolling, match your course schedule to the correct location, check selective admission and prerequisites, and estimate expenses beyond tuition. Compare the Downtown Campus, Technical Campus, Southwest Campus, Shelby County Campus, Bullitt County Campus and Carrollton Campus profiles.
