Maskay guide

What Japanese consular services are available in Sarajevo, and when do you need an appointment?

A guide to Japanese passports, certificates, registrations and visas in Sarajevo, including access and processing times.

Japan’s Embassy in Sarajevo is the country’s only Japanese mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It serves Japanese nationals who need documents or consular assistance and handles applications for Japanese visas. The official pages separate passports, certificates and family filings and provide a useful operational detail: passports are not produced in Sarajevo, so issuance takes about three weeks.

The office is at Bistrik 9, Sarajevo 71000. The telephone is +387 33 277 500, the general email is japanbih@sx.mofa.go.jp and the after-hours emergency number is +387 62 990 600. The Embassy is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; published consular and visa hours are 9:00 a.m.–noon and 1:30–5:00 p.m. The mission asks visitors to call or email in advance to arrange a visit. This also lets applicants confirm documents, whether attendance is required and whether collection is on a later date.

Passport services include new applications, renewals, changes, extra pages and lost-passport cases. Centralized production in Tokyo explains the approximate three-week period, so apply before a current passport expires or a trip approaches. Collection and emergency travel documents may have separate requirements that should be confirmed directly.

The consular index also covers certificates, overseas residence registration, birth and marriage notifications, nationality and overseas voting. A Japanese certificate for use in Bosnia may need a particular language, authentication or issue date set by the receiving institution; verify the exact document with that authority first. Bosnian citizens may be visa-exempt for certain short visits to Japan, but passport, purpose and length of stay determine whether an application is needed. Bosnian residence procedures are not handled by Japan’s Embassy.

Before travelling to Sarajevo, send a specific inquiry with the procedure, nationality, residence status and deadline. The office can clarify the document list and appointment; do not assume the Embassy’s general working hours mean walk-in consular service. If you need a passport, allow several weeks for production. Mission social media is useful for institutional announcements, but requirements and closures should be confirmed on the official site or with the Consular Section.
