Maskay guide

Which Japanese consular services are handled in Rome, and which Italian regions fall under the Embassy?

A guide to Japan’s Rome embassy consular section: central and southern Italy, passports, visas, appointments and access.

The first point is the institution’s title: Rome has the Consular Section of the Embassy of Japan in Italy, not a separate consulate-general. The Embassy divides the country with the Consulate-General in Milan. Rome covers Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia. Milan serves Piedmont, Aosta Valley, Liguria, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Emilia-Romagna. Your home address, rather than the city where you happen to be visiting, is the starting point.

For Japanese nationals, the consular menu includes passports, certificates, family-register and nationality matters, overseas residence registration and voting abroad. The Embassy also publishes traveller guidance and instructions following a lost or stolen passport: obtain a police report, then contact the section to determine whether a return travel document or an emergency passport fits the situation. These are not interchangeable outcomes; the route depends on itinerary and available documents.

Visas, appointments and document preparation

The section also accepts Japanese visa applications. Category, documents and processing time depend on the purpose and the applicant’s legal residence; tourist requirements do not replace those for study, employment or a long stay. The Italian homepage provides access to online consular booking, while Japanese instructions updated on 1 April 2026 say appointments can be requested by phone or email and ask for the applicant’s name, city of residence, mobile number, procedure and up to three preferred dates. Because the pages surface more than one channel, follow the current link for your category and confirm directly if the option is unclear.

The counter is open Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m.–12:45 p.m. and 2:15–4:30 p.m., subject to holidays and local closures. An appointment is required. Do not arrive with an incomplete file: check the procedure’s document list and payment instructions, and establish whether personal appearance is needed or whether part of the process can be completed online. Certain electronic certificates are available under specific conditions; not every document can be replaced by a digital download.

Address and the limits of the office

The Embassy is at Via Quintino Sella 60, 00187 Rome, where the consular counter is located. The published section telephone is +39 06 487 991 and its email is consolare@ro.mofa.go.jp. The Embassy is also accredited to San Marino and Malta, but the correct channel and paperwork should be checked for each case. It is not an Italian immigration office and does not decide Italian residence permits; its remit is Japanese consular service.

Hikariko Ono is listed as Ambassador on the institution’s homepage. For a family renewing passports, registering a birth or applying for a Japanese visa, the practical sequence is to identify the responsible region, open the exact procedure page, book and bring the required originals and copies. The linked profile lists contact details; this guide explains the territorial split and which matters call for an in-person visit or a specific digital channel.
