Maskay guide

What can you do at Japan’s Embassy in Prague, and how do you book a consular visit?

A practical guide to passports, certificates, family records and visas at Japan’s Prague Embassy, including appointments and counter hours.

Japan’s Embassy in Prague serves both Japanese nationals and people seeking to travel to Japan, but those are separate routes. Before making the trip, identify whether you need a Japanese passport renewed, a birth or marriage abroad recorded, a certificate for a Czech authority, or a Japanese visa application. The Consular Section is at Klicperova 3208/12 in Praha 5, near Anděl; it is a different address from the Japan Information and Culture Center.

Published counter hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., except closure days. The telephone is +420 257 533 546 and the consular email is ryoji@ph.mofa.go.jp. Since 1 June 2026, the Embassy has used a reservation-priority system: some procedures require an appointment, while an unbooked visit may mean a long wait or an incomplete application that cannot be accepted. To request a time, email three preferred dates, the purpose, number of applicants, name and telephone number. The confirmation includes a number to present at entry.

Passport applications can be made online or at the counter. Online filing may reduce the in-person steps to collection, but the applicant must personally collect the completed passport; the Embassy states a maximum processing period of four weeks. Emergency travel documents are assessed individually. Applications for minors have separate validity, parental-signature and consent requirements. Confirm the appointment and original documents needed before visiting.

The certificate catalogue covers residence, birth, capacity to marry, marriage, signatures, police records, driving-licence extracts and certain translations of Japanese-issued documents. Many are issued within about two days, while some take from one week to three months. The Embassy says it does not issue apostilles; that authentication is handled by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It also receives notifications of births, marriages, divorces and other civil-status or nationality changes.

For visas, Prague accepts applications from Czech citizens and other people legally resident in Czechia; it is not a walk-in visa desk for every traveler passing through. Short stays may be visa-exempt depending on nationality and purpose. Work or stays over 90 days follow a different route, generally beginning with a Certificate of Eligibility. The official page gives one week as the ordinary processing period and says expedited issuance is unavailable; an appointment is required to submit. Check whether Czech-language documents need English or Japanese translation, and wait for the decision before buying non-refundable travel.
