In Paris, the key question is not only what the Embassy offers but whether your home département falls within its district. Japan divides consular coverage in France among the Embassy in Paris, the Consulates-General in Strasbourg and Marseille, and the consular office in Lyon; New Caledonia has an office in Nouméa. The Embassy publishes a current map and département table. Paris and much of Île-de-France belong to the Paris post, while Alsace is assigned to Strasbourg and parts of the southeast to Marseille or Lyon. If your address is near a boundary, use the official table rather than a tourism directory.
The consular menu includes passports, certificates, family-register and nationality procedures, overseas voting, Japanese visas and guidance for Japanese nationals. Passport and certificate procedures have separate pages, with online handling for selected services. Appointment and document rules vary by category. The Embassy also covers Monaco and Andorra, but the published district map determines which other French post serves each area.
Japanese visas in Paris follow a separate process
The Embassy’s current 2026 French-language visa guidance says applications in Paris must be filed within the three months before travel, by the applicant in person, after booking by email. Files are accepted only in the morning, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.; the page gives an ordinary processing time of about five working days, which may be longer when checks are needed. Bring the passport and complete file from the category checklist. Appointment calendars open for limited periods, so check the page immediately before sending a request.
The Embassy also offers outreach sessions for Japanese residents outside Paris. Its 2026–27 schedule lists cities and warns that dates and venues can change, and that a session may be cancelled if demand is low. Outreach does not equal a permanent consulate: advance procedures may be required, and each notice defines what can be submitted or collected. Visa booking rules for residents of areas assigned to Strasbourg, Marseille or Lyon may differ.
Address, documents and access
The Embassy is at 7 avenue Hoche, 75008 Paris. The consular counter is open Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and 2:30–5:00 p.m., excluding closure days. Morning applications close at 12:30, except overseas-voting registration, which runs until 1:00 p.m. Visitors should bring a passport or residence permit as identification. The main telephone is +33 1 48 88 62 00; consular contact pages give the relevant email for each procedure.
The linked profile gathers the address, contacts and service categories. This guide adds the detail most likely to prevent a wasted journey: check your département before booking. The Embassy is the right post for areas assigned on its map, but the nearest Japanese mission is not automatically responsible for your address.
