Japan’s Embassy in Cyprus offers more than passport renewals: its consular portfolio includes civil-status filings, certificates, safety information for Japanese residents and, since June 2026, Japanese visa applications from eligible applicants. The first practical distinction is between procedures for Japanese nationals and applications from foreign nationals planning to visit Japan; the two groups follow different rules.
The office is at 5 Esperidon Street in Strovolos, Nicosia. The main telephone is +357 22 394 800 and the consular email is cy-ryouji@cy.mofa.go.jp. The counter receives visitors on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:00 a.m.–noon and 2:00–4:00 p.m., except holidays. The Embassy says all counter service is by appointment. State the procedure before travelling; the mission’s general opening hours do not mean consular walk-ins are accepted.
For Japanese nationals, official pages list passports, emergency travel documents, birth and marriage filings, residence certificates, signature certification, civil-status records and other documents. Many certificates can be requested through ORRnet, the online residence-report system, and some are issued electronically. Check that the receiving authority accepts an e-certificate before choosing that option. Since August 2026, certain holders of a My Number Card marked for overseas transfer can also apply for passports through Myna Portal.
Japanese visa applications have specific eligibility criteria: the Embassy accepts Cypriot citizens and foreign nationals with a valid Cyprus residence or work permit. Its guidance excludes residents of northern Cyprus who do not hold Republic of Cyprus identification. Start by emailing the Consular Section, which supplies the applicable checklist and booking link. The published standard processing time is five working days after submission, but screening may take longer and cannot be expedited to match a flight.
When requesting an appointment, include nationality, residence status, procedure and deadline, and ask which originals, photographs, fees and in-person steps are required. The Embassy retains applicants’ passports while visa cases are processed and may request additional documents; its instructions say flight bookings are not needed to apply. The institutional page lists Iwasaki Satoshi as Ambassador. Confirm the appointment and closures directly before travelling.
