Maskay guide

What can Japan’s Munich Consulate-General handle, and how do residents of Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg book a visit?

A guide to Japan’s Munich consulate: two-state jurisdiction, services, appointments, hours, Ostbahnhof access and outreach.

Start with jurisdiction. The Consulate-General of Japan in Munich accepts applications from people whose residence is in Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg; working temporarily in Munich or passing through the city does not automatically make this the responsible office. The consulate repeats the same two-state boundary for visa applications. If you live elsewhere in Germany, check which Japanese mission serves your home address before preparing a file or travelling.

Next, identify the procedure. The published menu for Japanese nationals includes passports, certificates, civil-status and family-register matters, nationality, overseas residence registration, overseas voting and safety guidance. Japanese travellers can also consult security and emergency information. Visas for Japan follow separate requirements based on purpose and immigration status in Germany; read the complete document list for your category rather than assuming that a similar visa follows the same rules.

Appointments depend on the procedure

In-person consular service is by appointment. The current site offers online booking, but distinguishes visa application appointments from collection of an issued visa: collection must be arranged directly by phone or email. Before booking a visa application, the office asks applicants to confirm residence, travel timing, processing lead time and required documents. If those conditions do not fit your case, contact the consulate instead of booking a slot that cannot be used to file.

Some procedures can be started online, including selected passport applications through Japan’s portal; that does not make every step remote. Personal appearance, delivery and supporting documents depend on the procedure. The consulate also announces outreach sessions, including in Freiburg or Stuttgart. These have limited appointment capacity and a defined list of services in each announcement. They should not be treated as a full substitute for the Munich counter, and past event dates should never be reused as current schedules.

Address, transit and what to bring

The current address is Friedenstraße 6, 81671 Munich. The office specifically says visitors must use entrance no. 6, not 6a; the floor is the German fourth floor. Ostbahnhof is the nearest station and is served by S-Bahn, U5, buses and trams. Follow the building directions and bring your appointment confirmation, identification and the original documents required for your procedure.

The counter is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 2:00–4:00 p.m.; the consulate has its own closure dates as well as weekends and holidays. The consular telephone number is +49 89 417 604 0, and ryoji@mu.mofa.go.jp is the published email for passports, registrations and related matters. The institution’s latest homepage, dated 14 October 2026, announces a newly arrived consul-general identified as Taguchi; the notice we verified does not provide a full name, so we do not expand it. The linked profile collects practical contact details, while this guide explains how to select the right channel before requesting an appointment.
