Where is Japan’s Detroit Consulate now, and what services does it handle?

An updated guide to Japan’s Detroit Consulate after its move to One Campus Martius: services, jurisdiction, appointments and access.

Anyone looking for the Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit should ignore an address still circulating in older documents. Since March 23, 2026, the office has been at 1000 Woodward Avenue, Suite 620, Detroit, Michigan 48226, inside One Campus Martius. Its previous location was the Renaissance Center. The move also changed visitor entry and document-mailing logistics, so an application prepared with the old address may be delayed or routed incorrectly.

The consular district covers Michigan and Ohio. For visas, the office says it accepts applications from residents of those states, with exceptions for some people in the United States on B1/B2 status. It is not a U.S. immigration office: it issues Japanese visas to foreign nationals travelling to Japan and provides Japanese consular services to Japanese nationals. Confirm district residence before starting each procedure.

Entry has several steps. The official directions tell visitors to register at One Campus Martius reception, obtain a visitor badge, pass security screening when required and select the sixth floor before entering the elevator. The recommended parking facility is One Campus Martius Garage at 1140 Farmer Street. The consulate cautions that fees may rise during major events and posted a temporary construction restriction running from August through October 19, 2026. Check the current notice and road closures before driving.

Published counter hours, Monday to Friday except holidays, are 9:15–11:45 a.m. and 1:00–4:30 p.m.; general telephone hours are 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. The main site says consular counter service is by appointment, and the visa section asks applicants to arrange a time with its staff. Do not assume a brief walk-in query will be accepted: passports, certificates and visas use separate channels and schedules.

The consular section lists passports and travel documents; birth, marriage and other civil-status filings; nationality matters; residence, signature, police and other certificates; residence registration; overseas voting; and emergency assistance to Japanese nationals. Some services may start online or by mail under specific conditions, while others require personal attendance. The office also publishes a calendar of limited outreach visits in Michigan and Ohio.

Visa pages cover temporary visits, work and long-term stays, plus eVisa where eligible. Fees depend on nationality and category; the current table we consulted took effect July 1, 2026 and distinguishes in-person from eVisa payment. The office identifies Hajime “Jimmy” Kishimori as consul general. Reviews of the former Renaissance Center location should not be carried over to One Campus Martius, and we could not confirm a reliable rating and review count for the new listing. The institutional profile sets out services and arrival steps.
