What services does Japan’s Denver Consulate offer, and which states does it serve?

A guide to Japan’s Denver Consulate for Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming: passports, certificates, visas and appointments.

In the Rocky Mountains, jurisdiction is a practical issue as well as an administrative one: travel to Denver can take hours. The Consulate-General of Japan in Denver exclusively serves Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Visa applicants must be physically and legally residing in one of those states; a mailing address or the nearest office alone may not satisfy the rules for a specific application.

The office is in 17th Street Plaza, 1225 17th Street, Suite 3000 (30th floor), Denver, CO 80202. The main telephone is +1 303-534-1151 and the consular email is cgjd-consular@de.mofa.go.jp. General office hours are longer than counter hours: the consular window is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.–noon and 1:30–4:30 p.m., by appointment. Current visa guidance says walk-ins are not accepted.

The building garage entrance is on 18th Street between Lawrence and Larimer. The official page lists indicative parking rates subject to change and points to metered street parking nearby. For a trip that may take several hours, arrange the appointment first and confirm which originals to bring, whether a case can be mailed and how collection works. The office observes U.S. and Japanese holidays and publishes its own annual calendar.

For Japanese nationals, the consulate handles passports, family-register and nationality matters, certificates, overseas-voting documents, consular assistance and safety notices. Some passport applications may be submitted online, but collection remains in person by appointment. Certificates include residence, signature, birth, marriage, police and driver-licence documents; each has a distinct purpose, evidence requirement and attendance rule.

Mail can help residents who live far away, but it is not a universal option. The certificate pages allow postal applications or delivery for certain cases and specify return-envelope requirements; some documents, including signature certificates, require signing before a consular officer. The method table distinguishes online-eligible documents from those that are not. From April 1, 2026, the office published fees for fiscal year 2026–27, including specific exceptions such as certain pension-related certificates.

The visa office provides information for tourism, business, study and longer stays. U.S. citizens may be exempt for some visits of up to 90 days, but exemption depends on nationality and purpose, not U.S. residence. Denver says expedited service is unavailable and estimates about five business days for many visas after a complete file is received; interviews or extra documents can extend that period. The office identified Hiroyuki Okajima as consul general in 2026. We could not confidently match a Maps rating and review total to this exact office, so we do not cite reviews for the building or another directory. The detailed profile explains services and preparation.
